Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the Georgia sun was warm and bright, casting a golden glow over my front porch.

The nightmare of the trial was finally over. With Harrison Vance’s immense legal team backing us—out of a sense of deep remorse and a desire to purge any association with Arthur—the criminal case had been swift and decisive. Arthur had pleaded guilty to multiple counts of grand larceny and criminal negligence, receiving a twenty-five-year prison sentence with no possibility of early parole.

Every single dollar he had stolen from Rose’s estate was recovered and placed into a secure, legally protected trust fund for the girls, managed solely by myself and Marcus.

But today, we weren't thinking about Arthur.

Today was a celebration.

The front yard was decorated with colorful balloons and a large banner that read: Welcome Home, Girls!

A small judge’s gavel sat on the table next to a cake. Just an hour ago, the family court judge had signed the final adoption papers. Lucy, Rachel, and April were officially, legally, my daughters now.

Rachel and April were running through the yard, chasing my golden retriever, their laughter echoing through the warm Savannah air. April’s cheeks were flushed with health, and she hadn't sucked her thumb in months.

I stood on the porch, holding a glass of iced tea, watching them with a full heart.

Lucy walked up the steps, holding a small silver frame. Inside was a beautiful, smiling photograph of Rose, taken during a happier summer years ago. Lucy placed the frame gently on the small table beside my rocking chair.

"We did it, Grandpa," Lucy said softly, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"We did, sweetheart," I said, wrapping my arm around her. "Your mother is at peace now. And you girls are safe. You will always, always have a home here."

For the first time in a very long time, the air in Savannah didn't feel heavy or suffocating. The scent of sweet jasmine carried on the breeze, replacing the memory of the wet, cold cemetery. The storm had passed, the truth had prevailed, and in the warm embrace of our family, a new, beautiful beginning had finally begun.
