Isabella turned and stared at her own reflection in the massive mirrored wall of the lobby.
Heavy tears filled her eyes.
"I've never worn anything this beautiful in my entire life," she whispered.
Then she turned toward Maya, completely ignoring Regina and the other designers.
"Who are you?"
For the first time that evening, Maya turned and looked directly at the crowd. The subtle, quiet micro-expressions of pain were gone. She stood tall, radiating an undeniable, natural authority.
"My name is Maya Brooks."
She looked directly at Regina.
"I graduated first in my class from Parsons School of Design."
The entire ballroom froze. The cameras stopped clicking.
"My mother became very sick during my final year," Maya continued, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "I left the fashion industry completely to care for her. When she passed away... the medical bills were too high. I couldn't afford another chance. I couldn't afford an internship."
