Chapter 3 - THE POLICE REPORT

For two hours, I sat in the family consultation room and laid out every single piece of evidence I had been collecting for months—evidence I had previously second-guessed because my husband convinced me I was losing my mind.

I showed Detective Ramos my phone logs. I showed her the dates I had called the pediatrician, the text messages from Mark calling me "crazy" and "ungrateful," and the video recordings I had secretly taken of Toby’s unusual lethargy over the past two weeks.

“My mother-in-law moved into our home six weeks ago,” I explained, my voice steady and cold. “She claimed it was to help with the baby. But immediately, she began taking over. She insisted I couldn't handle two children. Every time I tried to step in, she and Mark would double-team me, telling me I was spiraling.”

“And your husband?” Detective Ramos asked, writing notes rapidly. “Was he present when these sedatives were administered?”

“Lily saw him,” I replied, my hands clasping together tightly. “She saw her father holding the baby while Eleanor fed him the liquid. He knew. He enabled it because he wanted to prove his mother was right.”

The detective exchanged a heavy look with the social worker. “Mrs. Vance, we have already seized the amber bottle from Dr. Sterling. Our officers were dispatched to your residence an hour ago with a search warrant. In Eleanor Vance’s bedroom, we found multiple over-the-counter and prescription sedatives, along with several altered oral syringes.”

“Did you arrest them?” I asked directly.

“Eleanor Vance has been taken into custody for child endangerment and poison administration,” Detective Ramos confirmed. “Your husband, Mark Vance, was brought in for questioning as an accessory. However, he is currently claiming he had no knowledge of what was in the syringe.”

I let out a bitter, humorless laugh. “Of course he is. Mark has never taken responsibility for a single thing in his life. His mother cleans up his messes, and when she makes one, he hides behind her skirt.”

“Given the circumstances,” Social Worker Sarah Miller chimed in gently, “CPS is issuing an immediate emergency protection order. Mark Vance is legally prohibited from contacting you, Lily, or Toby, and he is banned from coming within five hundred feet of your children until a full family court hearing can be conducted.”

“Good,” I said, standing up. “Because he doesn't have a family anymore.”
