Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm in the Boardroom

While the safehouse in the dunes offered temporary peace, the war for the Volkov empire was reaching its final, decisive crescendo back in downtown Chicago.
Inside the sleek, glass-walled boardroom of Volkov International, the remaining board members sat in deathly silence. At the head of the polished obsidian table sat Victor Vance—battered, desperate, and backed into a corner. He had managed to evade federal custody by bribing local enforcement, but his criminal empire was crumbling around him.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, echoing crash.
Mikhail Volkov walked in.
He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt, and a dark silk tie. Behind him walked Callahan and four armed enforcers, sealing off every exit. The air in the room instantly dropped twenty degrees.
Victor Vance stood up from his chair, his face contorted in a sneer of pure hatred. "Volkov. You think you've won, don't you? You think because you burned down my warehouses and bought off my capos, you own the city?"
Mikhail walked slowly toward the head of the table, his footsteps clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't rush. He moved with the terrifying grace of an apex predator closing in on wounded prey.
"You targeted a child, Victor," Mikhail said quietly, resting his knuckles on the edge of the table. "You brought violence to the doorstep of an innocent woman who had nothing to do with our war. That was your fatal mistake."
"She’s just a waitress!" Victor spat, laughing bitterly. "A nobody! You're going to tear down a billion-dollar syndicate over a diner cook?!"
Mikhail’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. In one lightning-fast movement, he drew his pistol, slammed the barrel flat against the mahogany table right in front of Victor’s chest, and leaned in close.
"She is everything you will never understand," Mikhail whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal fury. "She has more honor in her little finger than exists in your entire bloodline. And as of this morning, every asset, every share, and every property bearing the Vance name has been legally seized by my trust to pay for the rebuilding of her diner."

Victor’s face drained of all color. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
"It's over, Victor," Mikhail said, straightening up and gesturing to Callahan. "Take him away. Hand him over to the federal task force. Let him spend the rest of his natural life reflecting on what happens when you cross a father protecting his family."
