Chapter 5: Unraveling the Web

With Efraín in custody, Verónica surrendered to the police the following morning. The state investigator, a sharp woman named Detective Silva, called Mauricio into the station to review the formal charges.

"We found more than just the Facebook messages, Mr. Salgado," Detective Silva said, sliding a folder across the desk. "When we searched your sister's house, we found a notebook belonging to Efraín. He had been planning this for months. He owed money to some dangerous people in Pachuca, and your mother's land was his only way out."

Mauricio flipped through the pages. It was chilling to see his mother's life calculated in numbers and debts.

"What happens now?" Mauricio asked.

"Both Verónica and Efraín are being charged with attempted aggravated homicide, forgery, and elder abuse," Detective Silva explained. "Because of the public outcry and the digital evidence you provided, the state prosecutor is pushing for the maximum sentence. They won't be getting out on bail."

As Mauricio walked out of the police station, he saw Clara, his niece, sitting on a bench outside, crying. He walked over and sat down beside her.

"Are you okay, Clara?" he asked gently.

She looked up, her eyes red. "I'm the one who leaked the account information to you, Uncle Mauricio. I couldn't live with the guilt. I heard them talking that night. I knew what they did to Abuela (Grandmother). I hate them for what they did."

Mauricio wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her into a hug. "You did the right thing, Clara. You saved us. You are nothing like them."

"What’s going to happen to me now?" she asked, looking lost. "My parents are going to prison."

"You’re coming with me," Mauricio said without hesitation. "We’re going to take care of Abuela, and we’re going to rebuild our family. Together."

The legal battle moved quickly over the next few weeks. The fraudulent deed was officially declared null and void by a judge, returning the land and the rights to the barbacoa business completely to Doña Refugio. Don Sergio, the corrupt developer, was also placed under investigation for his involvement in the fraudulent land grab.

The dark cloud that had hung over the Salgado family was finally beginning to lift, but the true healing was just beginning.
