Chapter 7 - Awakening

The sterile white lights of the ICU observation room hummed softly at 7:00 AM.

Vincent stood outside the glass partition, his hands resting flat against the cool surface. Inside, Elena Martinez lay motionless beneath a white sheet, hooked up to a rhythmic heart monitor that beeped with steady, reassuring regularity.

Beside him on a small rolling chair, little Sophie was sleeping soundly, wrapped in a warm blanket provided by the nursing staff, her head resting against Vincent’s thigh where he sat nearby.

The door behind him opened softly. Dr. Vance stepped out, wiping his hands on a fresh paper towel, a tired but genuine smile on his face.

"She's waking up, Vincent," the doctor said quietly.

Vincent stood up instantly, careful not to wake Sophie. "Can I go in?"

"One at a time. And keep it brief. Her cognitive functions are returning, but she’s still very weak."

Vincent nodded, taking a deep breath—something he hadn't consciously done in hours—and pushed open the ICU door.

The room smelled of antiseptic and sterile air. He walked slowly to the bedside, his boots making no sound on the linoleum floor. Elena’s eyelids fluttered. Slowly, painfully, her green eyes drifted open. They were bloodshot and heavy, filled with the haze of heavy sedatives.

She stared up at the ceiling for a long moment before her gaze shifted sideways, landing directly on Vincent Torino.

She didn't scream. She didn't panic.

Instead, a faint, bittersweet smile touched her pale, bruised lips.

"You... you finally got here," she whispered, her voice a dry rasp.

Vincent froze, his throat tightening. He pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down, leaning forward so she could see him clearly.

"Thirty-one years, Elena," Vincent murmured, his voice cracking slightly for the first time in decades. "Maria kept you safe."

"She made me promise," Elena breathed, blinking back tears. "She told me... if the darkness ever caught up to us... to find the only man in Chicago who was dangerous enough to stop it."

Vincent reached out, his large, scarred hand gently taking Elena’s frail, pale fingers.

"She told you the truth," Vincent said, his voice fierce with absolute conviction. "The men who did this are gone. Rossi is finished. The council has no power left. You and Sophie are safe. No one will ever touch you again."

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure, profound relief. "Thank you... Vincent."

"Rest now," he whispered, squeezing her hand gently. "I've got you."
