Chapter 9 - The Shadow at the Gate

While breakfast in the private suite was filled with warmth and laughter, downstairs in the main courtyard, the fragile peace of the Duca estate was about to be shattered.
A sleek black sedan bearing diplomatic plates from Zurich pulled up to the front security gates without stopping, its horn blaring a harsh, demanding rhythm.
Security guards rushed to the intercom, but before they could speak, the rear window rolled down, and Victor Vance—the ruthless patriarch of the Swiss banking syndicate and Lorenzo’s primary European financial partner—leaned out, his face twisted in cold fury.
"Open this damn gate!" Vance bellowed at the intercom. "Tell Lorenzo Duca that his little housecleaning stunt in the east wing has frozen three billion euros in international wire transfers! If he thinks he can assault my chief associate Maroni and get away with it, he’s got another thing coming!"
Inside the third-floor suite, the security monitor mounted on the mahogany wall blinked silently, displaying the live camera feed from the front gate.
Lorenzo stood by the window, holding a cup of black coffee, watching Victor Vance scream at his guards on the high-definition screen. His face did not twitch. His pulse did not quicken.
Ranata gasped, clutching Maya protectively against her side. "Mr. Duca... that’s Mr. Vance. He’s... he’s the most powerful banker in Europe. If you made an enemy of him—"
"Let him scream," Lorenzo interrupted, taking a calm sip of his coffee.
He pressed the intercom button on the wall panel, connecting his voice directly to the speaker at the front gates.
"Victor," Lorenzo’s voice boomed across the estate grounds, calm, chilling, and amplified by the courtyard speakers.
Outside, Vance froze, looking up at the third-floor window where Lorenzo stood framed by the glass.
"Lorenzo!" Vance shouted into the air. "You've crossed a line! Maroni is under our protection! Hand him over, or we pull every line of credit from your shipping ports by noon!"
Lorenzo took another slow sip of coffee before speaking again.
"Victor," Lorenzo’s voice echoed across the courtyard, smooth as silk and cold as ice. "You have exactly two minutes to turn your car around and get off my property. If you aren't past the outer gates by the time the timer hits zero... I won't just freeze your wire transfers. I'll liquidate your entire Swiss portfolio and use it to pave a parking lot over your bank in Zurich."
Silence fell over the courtyard.
On the security monitor, Victor Vance stared up at the window for five agonizing seconds, his face turning the color of curdled milk. Then, without saying another word, he rolled up his window, barked an order to his driver, and the black sedan squealed in reverse, speeding wildly out through the gates.
Maya clapped her hands together, giggling delightedly. "You scared the grumpy old man away!"

Lorenzo turned away from the window, a faint, satisfied smirk touching his lips as he looked down at the little girl who had changed the entire temperature of his life in less than twenty-four hours.
"Yeah, Maya," Lorenzo murmured softly, walking back toward the table. "Some people just need a little reminder of who owns the garden."
