CHAP 3 — The Folder at the Cake Table

The first security guard stepped through the ballroom doors in a black suit.
Then another.
Behind them came a legal investigator named Diane Mercer, carrying a thick blue folder and wearing the expression of a woman who enjoyed giving powerful people bad news in public.
Victoria backed up one step.
Her hip hit the dessert table.
The massive white cake trembled.
“Alexander,” she said, voice low, “we should discuss this privately.”
“No.”
The word cut clean through the room.
Victoria’s eyes flashed.
“I am your mother.”
“And Sophia is my daughter.”
Diane Mercer stopped beside Alexander.
“Victoria Sterling,” she said, “you have been served notice of emergency asset restraint, trust investigation, and immediate suspension from Sterling Family Holdings pending review.”
Gasps broke out across the ballroom.
Victoria’s face went pale.
“This is absurd.”
Diane held up the blue folder.
“Wire transfers intended for the care of Sophia Sterling were routed through three accounts and deposited into the Bellhaven Offshore Trust. That trust lists you as controlling beneficiary.”
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Alexander’s voice dropped.
“For three years, I sent money for food, rent, doctors, school. You stole it.”
“I managed it.”
“You stole it.”
Victoria glanced at Sophia.
Something ugly crossed her face.
“Lauren made choices.”
Alexander felt Sophia’s little hands grip his jacket.
“What choices?”
His mother’s silence answered first.
Then Diane opened another section of the file.
“Mr. Sterling, we also located correspondence from three years ago. Your ex-wife never refused contact. Several messages were intercepted through your mother’s office.”
Alexander could not move.
Diane continued, “There are also drafts of the letter you believed came from Lauren. Metadata suggests it was created on a device registered to Victoria Sterling’s assistant.”
The ballroom blurred.
The letter.
The divorce.
The silence.
Three years of anger pointed at the wrong woman.
Victoria lifted her chin.
“She would have ruined you. She never belonged in this family.”
Alexander stared at her.
“You made my daughter poor to punish her mother.”
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“She needed to learn that the Sterling name is not a charity.”
The cake table shook as she stepped back again. A fracture ran down the bottom tier of the white cake.
Guests whispered.
Someone began filming until a security guard told them to stop.
Alexander turned to Diane.
“Freeze every account she controls.”
Victoria gasped.
“You can’t.”
“I can.”
“You’ll destroy your own family.”
Alexander looked at Sophia’s dirty feet.
“No, Mother. You already did.”
Sophia whispered near his collar.
“Daddy, can we go get Mommy now?”
His throat closed.
“Yes,” he said, holding her tighter. “Right now.”

Then he looked at Victoria under the chandelier light.
“You starved my daughter. Tonight, I strip you of everything.”
