Chapter 1 - The Shattered Dynasty

The word echoed off the gilded walls of the Mercer ballroom, striking the gathered elite like a physical blow.
Wife.
Vivienne Mercer’s hand froze mid-air, still clutching the severed braid of Mara’s dark hair. The silver embroidery scissors slipped from her fingers, clattering sharply against the marble floor right next to a crushed white orchid. Her immaculate, surgically tightened face went entirely pale, her lips parting in utter disbelief.
"Wife?" Vivienne repeated, the word sounding foreign and repulsive on her tongue. She looked from Julian’s thunderous expression to Mara’s kneeling, pregnant form. "Julian, what kind of sick joke is this? She is a maid. She cleans our guest rooms. She is a nameless charity case your father took in!"
Julian didn’t answer his mother. He dropped to his knees in the middle of the ruined orchids, completely disregarding how the damp floor soiled his bespoke trousers. His hands, usually so steady and commanding, trembled slightly as he reached out to cupped Mara’s pale face.
"Mara," he whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability none of the forty high-society onlookers had ever heard from the ruthless heir of Mercer Enterprises. "Look at me, sweetheart. Are you alright? Is the baby okay?"
Mara slowly lifted her head. Her eyes, usually a quiet and submissive hazel, were wide with terror and unshed tears. The thin scratch near her hairline, caused by the sharp edge of the scissors, was bleeding slightly, a tiny bead of crimson stark against her porcelain skin. She looked at the circle of wealthy predators staring down at her, and then into the fierce, protective depths of Julian’s dark eyes.
"Julian... you shouldn't have said that," she sobbed softly, her hand still protectively guarding her swollen eight-month belly. "The contract... your mother's wrath... they will ruin you."
"Let them try," Julian snarled, his chest heaving.
He slid his arms beneath her knees and her back, lifting her effortlessly into his embrace. Mara gasped, clutching his neck as her gray uniform dress bunched up, revealing the heavy swell of her pregnancy to the entire room. The guests erupted into a frenzy of hushed whispers. The scandal of the decade was unfolding right before their eyes, and the social media accounts of the city’s elite were already buzzing with frantic, encrypted messages.
"Julian Mercer!" Vivienne shrieked, taking a step forward, her diamond necklace catching the light of the chandeliers. "You put that girl down this instant! If you carry her out of this room, you are dead to this family. I will strip you of your title, your inheritance, and your position at Mercer Enterprises by tomorrow morning! Your father’s board will never accept a gutter-born servant as the matriarch of this empire!"
Julian stopped. He turned his head slowly, his profile silhouetted against the bright, snowy window behind him. His eyes were devoid of any warmth, looking at his mother as if she were a stranger.

"You think this empire belongs to you, Mother?" Julian said, his voice carrying a terrifying, quiet resonance that silenced the entire ballroom. "My father left fifty-one percent of the voting shares to me, locked in a trust that matured on my twenty-fifth birthday last month. I don't need your permission. And as of this second, you are banned from the executive suite."
With that final, crushing blow, Julian walked out of the ballroom, leaving Vivienne standing amidst the ruined South American orchids and the shattered remains of her absolute authority.
