Chapter 2 – Part 2: The Plan Behind the Promise

Chapter 2 – Part 2: The Plan Behind the Promise

Amy stared at the document until the words blurred together.

Her fingers tightened around the pages.

"This... can't be real."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What is it?"

She silently handed him the agreement.

His eyes scanned the first page.

Then the second.

By the time he reached the signature page, his expression had hardened.

"This isn't a prenuptial agreement."

Amy shook her head.

"No."

"It's a post-marital property transfer."

Marcus looked back at her.

"It would have transferred control of your thirty percent ownership in Collins Design Group into a family trust managed by..."

He stopped reading.

Amy finished the sentence for him.

"...Maverick."

The room fell silent.

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"If you had signed this after the wedding..."

"I would have lost my voting rights."

"And eventually your shares."

Amy felt sick.

She had trusted him completely.

She remembered the countless evenings when Maverick had insisted she was "too busy" to deal with paperwork.

"I'll take care of everything after the honeymoon."

Now she finally understood why.

Chloe's Secret

Chloe wiped tears from her eyes.

"I found the documents by accident."

Amy looked at her.

"How?"

"My dad asked me to pick up a folder from Maverick's office yesterday."

She swallowed.

"There were two folders."

"One said 'Wedding.'"

"The other said 'Confidential.'"

"I opened the wrong one."

Amy waited.

"There were emails."

"Between Maverick..."

"And Penelope."

Marcus frowned.

"About the company?"

Chloe nodded.

"They talked about waiting until the marriage was legal."

"Then filing the transfer."

Amy leaned against the table.

The affair had been devastating.

But this...

This was calculated.

Months of planning.

Months of deception.

Her best friend hadn't only stolen the man she loved.

She had helped him steal her future.

Penelope Tries Again

A gentle knock interrupted them.

Before anyone answered, the door opened.

Penelope stepped inside.

Her makeup had been washed away.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

"Amy..."

Marcus immediately moved between them.

"I don't think now is the time."

Penelope looked only at Amy.

"I just need five minutes."

Amy considered her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Marcus."

He hesitated.

"You sure?"

"Yes."

Marcus and Chloe quietly left the room, closing the door behind them.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Finally Penelope whispered,

"I know you hate me."

Amy gave a sad smile.

"Hate?"

She looked down at the friendship bracelet Penelope had given her after college graduation.

She had worn it for years.

"I don't even know who you are anymore."

Penelope's shoulders shook.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

Amy laughed softly.

"And yet..."

"Here we are."

The Truth

Penelope slowly sat down.

"I met Maverick two years ago."

Amy frowned.

"We all met him together."

Penelope nodded.

"I know."

"But after that dinner..."

"He called me."

Amy felt another piece of her heart break.

"He said he needed advice."

"About you."

"He said he wanted to surprise you."

"So we started talking."

"Every day."

Amy listened without interrupting.

"At first it really was about you."

"But then..."

Penelope looked away.

"I fell in love with him."

"And he told me he wasn't sure he wanted to get married."

Amy asked quietly,

"Then why didn't he leave?"

Penelope closed her eyes.

"Because he couldn't."

"Why?"

"He needed the wedding."

Amy's voice became almost a whisper.

"...Because of the company?"

Penelope nodded.

"Yes."

The Mastermind

Amy stared at her in disbelief.

"So this was his idea?"

Penelope hesitated.

Then said something unexpected.

"No."

Amy looked up sharply.

"What?"

"It wasn't Maverick."

Penelope twisted her hands nervously.

"He didn't think of it."

"Someone else did."

"Who?"

Penelope looked terrified.

"If I tell you..."

Amy stepped closer.

"If you tell me what?"

The answer barely escaped Penelope's lips.

"His father."

Amy froze.

"What?"

"He told Maverick that marrying you would solve all of the family's financial problems."

Amy shook her head.

"No."

"Mr. Bennett would never—"

"I'm telling the truth!"

Penelope cried.

"He planned everything."

"The engagement."

"The paperwork."

"The trust."

"The timing."

"He even said..."

She broke down sobbing.

Amy waited.

Finally Penelope whispered,

"He said love fades."

"But ownership lasts forever."

Amy's world tilted.

Mr. Bennett...

The man who had apologized publicly.

The man who had looked ashamed.

Had it all been an act?

Aunt Rose Overhears

Neither woman realized the conference-room door had not fully latched.

Outside, Aunt Rose stood perfectly still.

She had heard every word.

Her expression changed.

Not to surprise.

To recognition.

Very slowly, she reached into her elegant handbag and removed an old leather notebook.

She flipped through yellowed pages until she found a familiar name.

Charles Bennett.

Thirty-five years earlier.

Beneath it, written in her own neat handwriting, was a single sentence:

"Never trust a man who mistakes kindness for weakness."

Aunt Rose closed the notebook.

"So..."

She murmured.

"You haven't changed after all."

She looked toward the ballroom where Charles Bennett stood comforting guests.

A faint smile crossed her face.

"You should have recognized me."

"You made one very expensive mistake."

A New Target

Inside the ballroom, Charles Bennett watched Amy leave the conference room.

His pleasant smile disappeared for just an instant.

He quietly took out his phone.

One short text message.

Destroy the files. Tonight.

He pressed Send.

Across town, in an office overlooking the city, a man in a gray suit read the message.

He opened a safe.

Inside were contracts.

Bank records.

Emails.

Documents bearing both the Bennett family name...

...and Collins Design Group.

He reached for a lighter.

But before he could strike the flame—

A firm voice came from the doorway.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

The man spun around.

May you like

Standing there, holding a search warrant and flanked by two detectives...

...was Marcus.
