Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room Whispers

The pediatric wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet, save for the soft, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor next to Emily’s bed. The walls were painted with cheerful cartoon animals, a stark, painful contrast to the dark reality of why we were here.

Emily lay under a thick white blanket, an IV drip feeding fluids into her dehydrated body. They had cleaned the dried blood from her split lip, but the dark purple bruises on her wrists—from trying to claw her way out of the metal cage—were still painfully visible.

I sat in the plastic chair beside her bed, holding her small, cold hand. I hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. My clothes were still stained with her sweat and the dust from the backyard.

There was a soft knock on the door. Detective Vance stepped inside, her expression heavy.

"How is she?" Vance asked quietly.

"Severely dehydrated, malnourished, and terrified," I whispered, my voice thick with exhaustion. "The doctor said she’s lost eight pounds in the last two weeks. Eight pounds for a ten-year-old... it's a lot."

Vance nodded, pulling up a chair. "Michael, I need to tell you what we found in the pool. It’s... it’s bad. But you need to know what we’re dealing with."

I braced myself, my grip on Emily’s hand tightening. "Tell me."

"The bags," Vance started, taking a deep breath. "They contained the remains of your old golden retriever, Barnaby. Emily’s dog."

My heart shattered. Barnaby had been Emily’s best friend. When Sarah and I divorced, Sarah kept the dog so Emily would have some comfort at her new house.

"According to Sarah's initial statement," Vance continued, "Jason got angry when the dog barked at him. He... he killed the dog in front of Emily. He told Emily that if she ever told you, or anyone else, she would end up just like Barnaby. That’s why he locked her in the cage. To 'teach her a lesson' about keeping secrets. He forced her to watch him throw the bags into the pool."

Tears hot as fire rolled down my cheeks. I looked at my sleeping daughter, her chest rising and falling. How had she survived that terror? How had I let this happen? I had ignored her quiet pleas for months, thinking she was just struggling with the divorce.

"Where is Sarah?" I choked out. "How could she let him do that?"

"Sarah is in custody," Vance said. "But she’s terrified of him. She claims Jason threatened her life, too. But she didn't protect her daughter, Michael. She’ll face charges for child endangerment and complicity. But here’s the problem..."

Vance paused, looking out the small window of the hospital room.

"Jason's bail hearing is tomorrow morning. He hired Harold Sterling—one of the most ruthless, expensive defense attorneys in the state. Sterling is already spinning a narrative. They are claiming the dog cage was a 'sensory decompression chamber' for Emily’s behavioral outbursts, and that the physical injuries were self-inflicted. They are claiming you broke into the house, assaulted Jason, and kidnapped Emily."

"That is a lie!" I nearly yelled, catching myself so I wouldn't wake Emily. "I have the padlock! I have Mrs. Harris’s statement!"

"Mrs. Harris is eighty-two, Michael. Sterling’s lawyers will tear her apart on the stand, calling her senile. And the padlock? They’ll claim you brought it yourself to stage the scene," Vance said, her eyes filled with frustration. "Jason has deep pockets and powerful friends in the city council. If he gets bail... he will come after you. And he will try to get custody of Emily back to silences her."

As if hearing her name, Emily stirred. Her eyelids fluttered open, her hazel eyes vacant and filled with fear until they landed on me.

"Daddy?" she whispered.

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here."

She reached out, her small fingers wrapping around my collar, pulling me close. "Don't let them take me back," she whimpered. "Jason said... he said the cage is still waiting. He said nobody escapes him."

I pressed my forehead against hers, the anger inside me solidifying into a cold, unbreakable resolve. "I promise you, Emily. Over my dead body."
