Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

With Dominic Vale dead and his hired mercenaries scattered or captured, the night belonged entirely to the Vance Syndicate.
By sunrise, the rain had washed the blood from the Navy Pier docks. The Vale family’s empire in New York and Chicago collapsed like a house of cards within forty-eight hours. Without leadership, their corrupt judges, politicians, and capos rushed to make deals with Mateo, surrendering all their assets in exchange for their lives.
Back at the Gold Coast mansion, the heavy mood of death and illness had completely lifted.
In the basement holding cells, Vanessa and Victor Vale sat in total silence, stripped of their designer clothes, waiting for their fate.
I walked down the concrete stairs, accompanied by Elena. I was fully dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, my posture perfect, my strength completely restored.
Vanessa looked up from her metal bench, her hair tangled, her makeup smeared. When she saw me standing there—vibrant, healthy, and powerful—a look of total defeat washed over her face.
"Julian..." she whimpered, crawling toward the iron bars. "Please... it was my father’s idea! He forced me! He told me if I didn't poison you, he would kill me!"
Victor glared at her in disgust. "You lying little cobra! You came to me with the plan!"
I looked at them both with supreme indifference.
"Save it," I said cold. "You’re not going to be killed. Death is too easy for people like you."
Vanessa blinked, a faint ray of hope touching her eyes. "You're... you're letting us go?"
"No," I smiled darkly. "I’ve handed over all the financial records of the Vale Corporation—including twenty years of offshore tax evasion, money laundering, and illegal pharmaceutical trials—to the Federal Prosecutor’s office. You aren't going to a mob grave. You're going to a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural lives."
Victor’s eyes went wide. "No! Not prison! Julian, please!"
"The FBI will be here in ten minutes to pick you up," I said, turning my back on them. "Enjoy your new life."
As their screams faded behind us, Elena and I walked back up into the grand foyer of the mansion.
The morning sun cast long, beautiful rays of light through the stained-glass windows, illuminating the antique artwork and polished marble floors.
Maya was sitting on the grand staircase, throwing a baseball up in the air and catching it in her glove. She looked down at us as we walked in.
"Is it over?" she asked simply.
"It’s over, kiddo," I said, offering her a warm smile. "The bad guys are gone."
Maya stopped throwing the ball. She looked around the giant, empty mansion, then looked at me. "So... what happens to us now?"
The question hung in the air.

Elena looked at me, a sudden anxiety in her eyes. She had saved my life, and I had destroyed our common enemies, but the fundamental question remained: Could a mafia boss truly build a life with a nurse and a young girl from the South Side?
"Come with me," I said, motioning toward the back terrace.
