Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Whitlocks

A deafening roar shattered the silence of the warehouse.

But it was not the sound of the mercenaries’ weapons. The massive glass skylights at the top of the warehouse shattered inward as tactical teams of federal marshals, dressed in black gear and armed with submachine guns, descended on ropes into the space.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!" the command echoed through the rafters.

The mercenaries, realizing they were completely outgunned and surrounded, immediately dropped their rifles, raising their hands in surrender. Claire let out a scream of rage, aiming her pistol at Hannah, but before she could pull the trigger, Daniel fired a single, precise shot that shattered her wrist. The gun clattered to the metal grating below as Claire collapsed, weeping and clutching her bleeding arm.

Charles Whitlock stood frozen, his face turning an ashen gray as the federal marshals swarmed the catwalk, pinning him to the ground and ratcheting heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.

"Charles Whitlock, you are under arrest for federal smuggling, conspiracy to commit murder, and treasonous commerce," the lead marshal declared, pulling the older man to his feet.

Daniel turned to Hannah, his hands trembling as he reached out to hold her face. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"

"I'm fine," Hannah whispered, her eyes shining with a deep, emotional relief as she looked down at the manifests in her hand. "It’s over, Daniel. We got them. We actually got them."

"Not quite over," a voice called out from the entrance of the drainage room.

Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. Standing beside the lead marshal was a tall, lean young man with messy brown hair and familiar, warm brown eyes. He was wearing a simple wool jacket, a wide, tearful smile spreading across his face.

"Caleb!" Hannah cried.

She ran to him, ignoring her aching back and her heavy belly. Caleb caught her in his arms, lifting her slightly as they wept together, a year of fear, grief, and separation melting away in the warmth of their embrace.

"I’m so sorry, Hannah," Caleb whispered, burying his face in her short hair. "I wanted to come back sooner, but Daniel kept me safe. He saved my life."

Hannah looked back at Daniel, who stood near the metal staircase, his dark eyes watching the reunion with a soft, quiet satisfaction. For the first time since she had met him, the cold, dangerous king of the Providence waterfront looked completely at peace.
