PART 8: The Secret Dominic Never Knew

The room changed after Sofia’s words.
Even Leo felt it.
He held Nora’s hand tighter and looked from Dominic to the silver-haired woman at the end of the table.
Nora’s voice was low. “What does she mean?”
Dominic did not answer because he did not know.
That was what scared him.
Sofia watched him with the calm cruelty of someone who had been waiting years to pull one final card.
“You built your life believing your father left you an empire,” she said. “He did not. Vincent Russo left you a trap.”
Dominic’s expression did not move.
But Nora saw his fingers tighten around the wheels of his chair.
Sofia continued, “The businesses. The hotels. The transport contracts. The charity foundations. All of it tied together with signatures, shell accounts, and favors. Eli found the thread because your father trusted drivers more than sons.”
Dominic’s voice was cold. “Say what you came to say.”
“Eli’s final file proves your legitimate empire is not legitimate.”
Tony looked at Dominic.
Reyes, standing near the door, went still.
Nora felt the ground shift beneath them.
Because clearing Eli might destroy Dominic too.
Sofia leaned back.
“That is why I tried to control this. Carmine was greedy. Stupid. Emotional. But I was protecting the name your father left behind.”
Dominic laughed once.
It was empty.
“You tried to protect a name by kidnapping a child?”
“I had him fed pancakes.”
Nora stepped forward.
“Say one more thing about pancakes.”
The room went silent.
Sofia looked at Nora as if she were an insect that had learned to speak.
Dominic turned to Reyes.
“Captain, take Leo and Nora downstairs.”
“No,” Nora said immediately.
“Nora—”
“No. My husband died for that file. My son was taken because of that file. Do not tell me to leave the room right before everyone decides what his truth is worth.”
Dominic met her eyes.
For a long moment, neither moved.
Then he nodded.
“Stay behind Tony.”
Nora did.
But she stayed.
Reyes took Sofia’s statement. Vivian confessed through tears that Sofia had ordered her to pick up Leo from school using information obtained from a private investigator. She claimed she believed it was temporary. A scare. A way to force Nora into silence.
Nora did not forgive her.
But she noticed something.
Vivian was afraid of Sofia.
Everyone was.
Except Dominic.
Dominic opened Tony’s laptop on the dining table and accessed the flash drive remotely from the copy they had made. The final encrypted folder required a password.
Tony tried Eli’s birthday.
Failed.
Leo’s birthday.
Failed.
Nora’s name.
Failed.
Nora whispered, “Try ‘closed door.’”
Tony typed it.
Failed.
Nora closed her eyes.
Eli’s voice came back to her.
Tell Russo I didn’t open the door.
Not closed door.
She stepped forward.
“Try ‘I kept it closed.’”
Tony typed.
The folder opened.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
Bank transfers.
Hotel security contracts.
Real estate acquisitions.
Names of judges, union leaders, city officials, executives.
Dominic’s legitimate world cracked open on the screen.
But there was one video file.
Tony clicked it.
Eli appeared again, sitting in his car at night.
“If this file comes out,” he said, “Dominic Russo may lose everything. But if it stays buried, Carmine and Sofia will use it to own him forever.”
Dominic did not blink.
Eli looked exhausted.
“I don’t know if Dominic is a good man. I know what people say. I know what he’s done. But I also know he didn’t order what Carmine is planning. And I know a man deserves the truth before his own family buries him alive.”
Nora’s eyes filled again.
Eli looked straight into the camera.
“Mr. Russo, if you’re alive, you have a choice. Save the empire your father poisoned, or burn it clean and become something else.”
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Sofia’s voice finally cut through the silence.
“There it is. The noble speech of a dead driver. Touching. Useless.”
Dominic looked at the documents.
Everything he owned.
Everything he had believed separated him from men like Carmine.
Contaminated.
His mother watched him carefully.
“Give me the drive,” she said. “Let Reyes take Carmine. Let the widow have her husband’s name. I can protect the rest.”
Dominic slowly turned toward her.
“No.”
Sofia’s face hardened.
“You do not understand what you will lose.”
Dominic looked at Nora.
At Leo.
At the final image of Eli frozen on the laptop screen.
“Yes,” he said. “I do.”
Then he looked at Reyes.
“Take it all.”
Tony’s head snapped toward him.
“Boss.”
“All of it,” Dominic repeated. “Every file. Every account. Every name. I want it entered before anyone in this room can make it disappear.”
Sofia stood.
“You will destroy your father’s legacy.”
Dominic’s voice was steady.
“My father’s legacy put me in this chair.”
Nora felt Leo lean against her side.
For the first time since Eli died, she felt something almost impossible.
Not safety.
Not yet.
But the beginning of it.
Then Reyes received a call.
His face changed.
He looked at Dominic.
“The district attorney’s office just got an anonymous leak.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
Reyes continued, “The files are already online.”
Tony went pale.
Sofia smiled.
Not in defeat.
In victory.

“Then the war is no longer ours,” she said.
“It belongs to the whole city.”
