Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Fortress

Holding my son for the first time felt like waking up from an eleven-year coma. His small body was tense at first, unused to the sudden squeeze of a stranger, but as my tears soaked into the shoulder of his faded blue shirt, I felt his little hands slowly reach up and clasp around my neck.
Marcus stood by the desk, staring at the crumpled letter on the rug. The battle-hardened head of security, a man who had never shown a flicker of emotion in fifteen years of service, looked as though he had been hit by a freight train.
"Julian..." Marcus rasped, using my first name for the first time in a decade. "Is it... is it true?"
"It’s Clara’s hand," I said, my voice cold as iron as I lifted Noah in my arms. The boy was shockingly light, his small frame revealing years of meager meals and rough living. "Get the armored convoy ready. We are going to Saint Jude’s Charity Hospital immediately."
"Boss, wait!" Marcus stepped into my path, his face tight with alarm. "The building is still on lockdown. We haven't caught the fake courier yet. If Arthur knows the boy came here—if he knows the truth about Clara’s letter—leaving the penthouse right now puts you and the child directly in the line of fire!"
I turned my head, locking eyes with Marcus. The grief that had consumed me moments ago froze over into an unyielding, terrifying rage.
"Arthur tried to murder my wife eleven years ago," I said, every word dropping like a lead weight onto the marble floor. "He forced my sister-in-law to live like a fugitive while she raised my son in the dirt. And thirty minutes ago, he tried to put strychnine in my morning coffee. If Arthur Hale steps in front of me today, Marcus, I won't wait for a trial."
Noah buried his head into my shoulder, frightened by the dark intensity of my voice. I immediately adjusted my posture, smoothing my hand over his untamed curls, softening my tone.
"It's okay, Noah," I whispered into his hair. "No one is going to hurt you ever again. I promise you."
"Is my mom going to be okay?" Noah asked softly, his small voice muffled against my suit. "She was crying before she went to sleep in the ambulance. She said she was sorry she couldn't stay until my birthday."
"We are going to bring the best doctors in the country to her, Noah," I promised him, looking up at Marcus. "Order Dr. Mercer and our private medical transport team to rendezvous at Saint Jude’s. I want Sarah transferred to our private wing at St. Anthony’s within the hour. If she needs a heart transplant, find the best surgical team in North America and fly them to Seattle on my jet."
"On it, Boss," Marcus said, pulling his radio comms to his mouth. "What about Arthur?"
"Don't alert him yet," I commanded, stepping toward the private executive elevator that bypassed the main lobby. "Let him think the strychnine is working. Let him believe I am lying dead on my office floor. He will make his move to seize the syndicate's master accounts as soon as news of my 'sudden illness' leaks. That is when we cut off his head."
We slipped into the private elevator—myself holding Noah, accompanied by Marcus and four of my most trusted tactical operators. As the steel doors closed, blocking out the glitz and polished mahogany of my penthouse office, Noah looked up at the digital floor indicator counting down.
"Your house is very big," Noah whispered, holding onto my collar. "Do you live here all alone?"
I looked down at my son, feeling a sharp pang of regret piercing my heart. "I used to, Noah. But you're coming home with me now."
"Will Mom come too?"
"If I have to fight heaven and earth to keep her alive, yes, son. She's coming home too."
The elevator reached the subterranean parking garage with a soft chime. Three heavy armored Suburban vehicles sat waiting, engines idling, their reinforced black glass tinted so dark no one outside could see within.
As we walked toward the center vehicle, a sudden radio crackle echoed from Marcus’s earpiece.
"Marcus! This is Security Control on Floor 37! We have a breach! Arthur Hale just authorized an emergency board meeting in the main auditorium! He claims Julian Hale has suffered a fatal cardiac arrest and is attempting to execute the syndicate succession protocol!"
Marcus looked at me, his finger pressed against his earpiece. "He's moving faster than we thought, Boss. He thinks you're already dead."
May you like
I set Noah gently inside the reinforced rear seat of the Suburban, buckling his seatbelt securely before looking back at Marcus.
"Let him start his meeting," I said, a cold, lethal smile touching my lips. "Let him tell the board that he is taking control of the Hale empire. I have a sister-in-law to save first. When I return, Arthur won't just lose his bid for power... he will lose everything he has ever built."
