CHAPTER 5: The Arrest Warrants

CHAPTER 5: The Arrest Warrants
Charles instinctively took another step backward.
Then another.
His polished smile was gone, replaced by the unmistakable look of a man calculating escape routes.
"There has to be some mistake," he said, forcing a laugh. "Surely we can discuss this privately."
Special Investigator Daniel Brooks didn't smile.
"There is nothing private about a court-authorized warrant."
The garden fell into absolute silence.
Even the catering staff had stopped moving.
Five hundred guests stood frozen, witnessing the unraveling of one of Newport's most influential families.
Vivian found her voice first.
"This is harassment!" she snapped. "Do you know who we are?"
Daniel calmly met her eyes.
"I do."
"And that's exactly why this investigation took longer than usual."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Everyone understood what he meant.
Powerful families rarely faced scrutiny.
Not until the evidence became impossible to ignore.
Charles suddenly pointed at me.
"She fabricated everything!"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He opened one of the sealed folders.
"The investigation began long before Mrs. Carter submitted her evidence."
Charles frowned.
"What?"
"We received reports from former Hawthorne employees over the last two years."
That caught everyone's attention.
Daniel continued.
"Former accountants."
"Household staff."
"Corporate employees."
"They described financial irregularities, intimidation, and deliberate efforts to conceal assets."
I recognized several faces in the crowd.
People who had quietly disappeared from the Hawthorne organization over the years.
Now I understood why.
They hadn't simply resigned.
They had refused to participate.
One woman stepped forward from among the catering staff.
She slowly removed her white serving apron.
I blinked.
"Nora?"
She smiled sadly.
"Hello, Emily."
Vivian looked stunned.
"You still work for me."
Nora shook her head.
"No."
She reached into her pocket and produced a small badge.
"My name is Nora Sanchez."
She turned toward Daniel.
"For the record, I've been working undercover with the Financial Crimes Task Force for the past eleven months."
Gasps erupted across the garden.
Vivian staggered backward.
"No..."
Nora looked at me.
"I'm sorry I couldn't tell you."
I smiled faintly.
"I understand."
She swallowed.
"There were days I wanted to."
"I know."
For nearly a year, Nora had watched everything.
The insults.
The manipulation.
The financial meetings.
The hidden conversations.
She hadn't been ignoring them.
She'd been documenting them.
Daniel addressed the guests.
"Many of you were invited here because your names appeared in Hawthorne Holdings' recent financial transactions."
Several executives exchanged nervous glances.
"To be clear," Daniel continued, "most of you are witnesses."
Relief washed over dozens of faces.
"However..."
He paused.
"A small number may have questions to answer."
Three men near the fountain quietly lowered their eyes.
One slipped his phone into his pocket.
Another began sweating visibly.
Vivian suddenly pointed toward the mansion.
"This is absurd."
She tried to regain control of the room.
"I demand that everyone leave immediately."
No one moved.
Instead...
One of the butlers approached me.
Not Vivian.
Me.
It was Harold.
He had worked for the Hawthorne family for almost thirty years.
His silver hair was neatly combed as always.
He bowed slightly.
"Mrs. Carter."
Vivian's eyes widened.
"Harold?"
He turned toward her.
"Mrs. Hawthorne."
His voice remained respectful.
"I've served this family faithfully since 1996."
Vivian straightened.
"Then tell these people they're making a mistake."
Harold looked at her with genuine sadness.
"I cannot."
He reached into his jacket.
"I've prepared my resignation."
Vivian stared.
"You... what?"
"I should have resigned years ago."
He glanced toward Lily.
"When you shouted at that little girl today..."
His voice cracked.
"...I realized I could no longer tell myself I was simply doing my job."
He handed the letter to Daniel instead.
"I am willing to provide a full statement."
Vivian's shoulders sagged.
One loyal employee leaving could be dismissed.
But Harold?
He had been the heart of the household for decades.
If even Harold had turned away...
Everyone knew the truth ran deep.
Lily looked up at me.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"Are the scary people going away?"
I smiled gently.
"They're not scary, sweetheart."
"They're here to help."
She watched the investigators carefully.
Then nodded.
"They're protecting us?"
"Yes."
"For real this time?"
I kissed her forehead.
"For real."
Daniel opened another envelope.
"Charles Hawthorne."
Charles swallowed.
"You are ordered to surrender your passport immediately."
"What?"
"You are prohibited from transferring any domestic or international assets pending further investigation."
Charles looked ready to collapse.
"You can't freeze everything."
Daniel handed him the document.
"The court already has."
Charles scanned the first page.
His hands began trembling.
"Our accounts..."
He looked at Vivian.
"They froze all of them."
Vivian grabbed the papers.
"Our investment funds..."
She flipped another page.
"The trust..."
Another page.
"The foundation..."
Everything.
Every major account under investigation had been temporarily frozen.
The Easter brunch.
The lavish decorations.
The expensive catering.
The designer flowers.
It had all been paid for only hours before the court order took effect.
Had the brunch been one day later...
It never could have happened.
Daniel looked toward me.
"Mrs. Carter."
I nodded.
"The court also asked us to deliver this."
He handed me a single envelope with the official seal of the state court.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
I read it once.
Then again.
A weight I had carried for years suddenly lifted.
"What is it?" David asked quietly.
I looked at him.
"My emergency petition was approved."
Lily tilted her head.
"What does that mean?"
Tears filled my eyes—not from sadness, but from relief.
I knelt beside her.
"It means no one can ever take you away from me."
Charles's head snapped up.
"What?"
Daniel spoke before I could.
"The family court has granted Mrs. Carter temporary sole legal and physical custody of Lily pending the outcome of the ongoing proceedings."
Charles lunged forward.
"You can't do this!"
Two federal agents stepped smoothly into his path.
"You will remain where you are, Mr. Hawthorne."
Charles shouted my name.
"Emily!"
For years, hearing that voice had filled me with dread.
Today...
It carried no power at all.
I looked directly at him.
"You once told me that without your family, I'd have nothing."
I slipped the custody order back into its envelope and gently took Lily's hand.
"You were wrong."
I already had everything that mattered.
Behind us, the investigators unfolded one final document.
Daniel looked at Vivian.
Then at Charles.
His expression was grave.
"There is one more warrant to be executed."
May you like
And judging by the look on his face...
This one would change the Hawthorne family forever.
