CHAPTER 7 – The Hunter Walked Into His Own Trap

CHAPTER 7 – The Hunter Walked Into His Own Trap
Rain began falling over Ashford Hall just as the security alarms echoed across the estate.
Every floodlight snapped on at once, turning the surrounding forest into a maze of white light and black shadows.
Victor's voice came over the tactical radio.
"Thermal drones are airborne."
Blue and red markers appeared across the surveillance monitors beneath the mansion.
One moving heat signature.
Then two.
Then...
Nothing.
"He disappeared," one operator reported.
Dominic studied the map without concern.
"He didn't disappear."
Victor looked at him.
"He stopped moving?"
"No."
Dominic pressed a button on the console.
A second map appeared.
It showed something the intruder could never have known.
Hidden beneath the woods surrounding Ashford Hall were abandoned maintenance tunnels left over from the estate's construction nearly eighty years earlier.
"The crash wasn't an escape attempt," Dominic said.
"It was a distraction."
Victor understood immediately.
"He's underground."
"Exactly."
Dominic calmly holstered his pistol.
"Seal every tunnel except one."
Victor smiled.
"You want him to think he found a way inside."
"I want him to believe he's winning."
Meanwhile, upstairs, Mara refused to leave Eleanor's side.
The elderly woman held her hand tightly.
"I'm afraid."
"I know."
"What if he comes back?"
Mara gently adjusted Eleanor's blanket.
"He won't touch you again."
Outside the bedroom, two armed guards stood watch.
For the first time in months, Eleanor looked at peace.
Not because danger had disappeared—
But because someone had finally believed her.
Deep beneath the estate...
A flashlight cut through the darkness.
The man in the gray coat moved silently through the tunnel.
The scar across his neck caught the dim light.
His name was Adrian Voss.
Former military intelligence.
Professional contract strategist.
For fifteen years he had solved impossible problems for powerful clients.
Tonight's assignment was simple.
Kill Dominic Ashford.
Destroy every piece of evidence.
Leave no witnesses.
He smiled.
Rich men always believed their homes made them untouchable.
Twenty feet ahead...
A steel door stood slightly open.
Exactly as Dominic intended.
Adrian stepped through.
The instant both feet crossed the threshold—
CLANG!
The reinforced door slammed shut behind him.
Heavy steel bolts locked automatically.
Red emergency lights flooded the chamber.
Adrian spun around.
Too late.
Speakers hidden inside the concrete walls came alive.
Dominic's calm voice echoed through the room.
"I've been waiting."
Adrian slowly lowered his flashlight.
"You built a cage."
"I built it after my third assassination attempt."
Dominic's voice remained emotionless.
"I never imagined you'd walk into it willingly."
Adrian laughed.
"You think steel stops men like me?"
He reached inside his coat—
Only to discover his phone had lost signal.
His remote detonator wouldn't respond.
Nothing electronic worked.
Erin's voice came through the speakers.
"Electromagnetic shielding active."
Victor added,
"You're completely isolated."
For the first time...
Adrian's smile faded.
At nearly the same moment, Celeste made her final mistake.
Believing everyone was distracted by the intruder, she quietly slipped into Dominic's private office.
She knew exactly what she wanted.
A black ledger hidden inside the wall safe.
The document that controlled millions of dollars in offshore accounts.
She entered the access code she had secretly recorded months earlier.
The safe opened.
Inside sat the ledger.
And beneath it...
A small envelope.
Curious, she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Celeste,
If you're reading this, it means you were never worthy of wearing my ring.
The ledger is fake.
The room is locked.
Smile for the camera.
—Dominic
She looked up.
A tiny red light blinked above the bookshelf.
The office door locked automatically.

Outside, Victor turned the key.
"It's over."
