Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Final Echo

Despite the peace that had settled over the estate, the past sometimes leaves lingering embers before it burns out completely.
It was an early evening in November when Marco pulled Aleandro aside in the study.
"Aleandro, I got a report from the federal prosecutor's office," Marco said softly. "Viktor Venturi's trial concluded today. He was sentenced to life without parole in a maximum-security federal facility."
Aleandro stood by the window, looking out at the calm garden. "Did he say anything?"
"His lawyers tried to appeal, but the evidence we provided was overwhelming. The Venturi name is officially gone from New York." Marco hesitated for a moment. "Also... some of the old family captains aren't happy with your decision to legitimize the business. A small faction led by Donati wants to split off."
Aleandro turned around, his eyes flashing with a flicker of his old authority. "Tell Donati he can take his crew and leave. But if he brings violence or illegal trade into any district where our foundations operate, I will use every legal and financial resource at my disposal to destroy him completely. Am I clear?"
"Crystal," Marco smiled. "You're much more terrifying as a legitimate billionaire than you ever were as a mafia don."
Aleandro let out a soft breath. "I have better things to protect now."
That night, a gentle snowfall began to cover the grounds of the estate. Inside, a roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace.
Annie was sitting on the floor near the hearth, building a tall tower out of wooden blocks. Ruth was sitting in her armchair, knitting a red wool scarf, while Aleandro sat nearby, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new children's hospital.
"Look, Just Aleandro!" Annie called out, pointing to her tall wooden tower. "It's the highest tower in the world!"
"It is very impressive, Annie," Aleandro said, putting his blueprints aside and joining her on the carpet. "But what happens if the wind blows?"
"Monster will protect it!" Annie declared, leaning against the big golden retriever who was sleeping peacefully beside her.
Aleandro smiled, picking up a wooden block and placing it carefully on top of the tower. "Then it is safe."
Annie looked at him, her dark eyes filled with pure affection. She leaned over and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, hugging him tight.
"I'm glad you found me at the pharmacy," she whispered into his shoulder.

Aleandro held her close, feeling the warmth of her small heart beating steady and strong against his chest.
"I am glad too, little one," he murmured softly. "You saved my life."
