Chapter 3 - The Descent into Panic

Mark sat in his leather executive chair on the top floor of Carter Enterprises, his hands trembling as he stared at the glowing monitor of his desktop computer. The corporate office was silent, cast in the deep, eerie shadows of evening, but the air felt suffocatingly hot.
His corporate accounts—the lifeblood of his financial empire—were locked.
When he had tried to transfer emergency funds to retain his usual aggressive legal counsel, an automated security protocol had frozen all primary assets pending an internal audit. Staring at the blinking error code on his screen, a cold sweat broke out across Mark’s forehead. This wasn't a glitch. This was an engineered hit.
The office door banged open, and Madison Vale rushed in, her expensive designer handbag clutched tightly against her chest, her face pale under layers of high-end makeup.
"Mark! What is going on?" Madison demanded, her voice shrill and panicked. "My credit cards were just declined at the boutique! And when I tried to log into the penthouse account, the leasing office called saying the rent check bounced because the account doesn't exist anymore! Mark, talk to me! What did you do?"
Mark slowly turned his chair around, his eyes bloodshot and wild. "Calm down, Madison? How can I calm down? Emily is gone, my kids are missing, my corporate accounts are frozen, and now our financial cushion is evaporating!"
"Your corporate accounts are frozen?" Madison’s voice pitched upward in pure disbelief. "Are you insane? You told me your business was bulletproof! You told me your wife was just a nagging housewife who would fold the moment you offered her a modest settlement! If I knew you were going to drag me down into financial ruin, I never would have given you a second chance!"
"A second chance?" Mark snarled, standing up so abruptly that his chair crashed backward onto the plush carpet. "I left my wife on the operating table while she was birthing triplets to come cut a cake with you, Madison! I threw away my entire marriage for you! Don't you dare stand there and act like an innocent bystander!"
Madison recoiled as if struck, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom. "Oh, please. You didn't do it for me, Mark. You did it because you ego couldn't handle the fact that I left you years ago for a better life. You wanted to prove you could win me back. Well, congratulations—you won. And now we're both going down."
Before Mark could retort, his desk phone began to ring relentlessly. The private line—a number known only to high-level executives, personal bankers, and his attorney—shrieked through the empty office.
Mark stared at the blinking light as if it were a venomous snake. With trembling fingers, he reached out and pressed the speakerphone button.
"Mr. Carter?" a cold, professional voice echoed through the room. It belonged to Arthur Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Associates, the formidable law firm Mark had retained for years.
"Arthur, thank God," Mark breathed, rushing toward the desk. "Listen, there's been a massive mistake with my accounts. Some internal audit error. I need you to file an emergency injunction—"
"Mr. Carter, I am calling to formally notify you that Sterling & Associates is terminating all legal representation effective immediately," Arthur interrupted, his tone devoid of any professional warmth.
Mark stumbled as if physically struck. "Terminating? Are you out of your mind? I’ve paid your firm millions over the last decade! You can't just drop me!"
"We can, and we have," Arthur replied smoothly. "Furthermore, my firm has been presented with irrefutable documentation regarding corporate asset diversion, fraudulent transfer of marital funds, and active embezzlement from subsidiary accounts—documents certified by federal investigators and backed by opposing counsel."
"Opposing counsel?" Mark’s voice rose to a frantic shout. "Who is opposing counsel? Who is representing Emily?"
"Elena Vance," Arthur said, the name dropping like a lead weight in the quiet room.
Mark froze. Elena Vance? The legend? The ruthless, retired corporate and family law titan who hadn't taken a case in over a decade?
"That's... that's impossible," Mark stammered, running a hand frantically down his face. "Elena Vance is retired. She doesn't take custody cases."
"She does when her goddaughter is the victim of domestic emotional abandonment and financial abuse," Arthur countered coldly. "Mr. Carter, my advice to you—if you even care to hear it—is to stop fighting. Surrender your remaining assets, cooperate with the court-appointed auditors, and pray that Ms. Vance is feeling merciful. Because if you try to pull any more stunts, you won't just lose your money. You'll be spending the next ten years of your life in a federal penitentiary."
Click.
The line went dead.
Mark stood motionless in the center of the dark office. The silence of the room felt oppressive, heavy with the terrifying realization that his entire world was collapsing around him. Madison was glaring at him with pure hatred, her bags already dropped by the door.

"We're done, Mark," Madison spat, turning on her heel. "Don't ever call me again."
The office door slammed shut behind her, echoing through the empty corridor. Mark was entirely alone. But instead of breaking, a dark, dangerous resolve began to harden in his chest. If Elena Vance thought she could destroy him, if Emily thought she could hide his children from him, they had severely underestimated how far a desperate man would go.
