Chapter 8 - The Siege Breaks

I scrambled up from the floor, gasping for air, and hit the manual override switch for the building's ventilation system on the main wall panel.
With a deep mechanical roar, the massive industrial air scrubbers on the roof kicked back on. Fresh, cold air burst through the ceiling vents, filling the server room and the vault next door.
I sank to the floor, taking giant gulps of the fresh air, my chest expanding as life returned to my exhausted body.
Outside the server room, the sound of heavy helicopter blades echoed from the sky.
I ran to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the end of the hall and looked out into the afternoon sky.
Four black-and-blue SWAT helicopters were hovering right outside the 60th-floor windows of Graves Tower. Below on the street, dozens of police cruisers, FBI vans, and armored vehicles had completely surrounded the building, their red and blue sirens painting the street below in flashing light.
Over the helicopter loudspeakers, a loud, booming voice echoed across the glass facade:
"ATTENTION JULIAN GRAVES. THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED. DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY!"
Inside the vault corridor, panic broke out among Julian’s remaining men.
"The FBI is on the roof!" someone screamed. "They're breaching the windows!"
I grabbed my backpack from the floor, pulled out the heavy black leather wallet, and ran back out into the main hallway toward the vault.
When I stepped through the destroyed titanium doorway, the scene was chaotic.
Julian was standing in the center of the room, looking at his phone in total disbelief, watching his own face broadcasted live on every major news network. His hands were shaking violently, his smooth, arrogant demeanor completely shattered into pathetic terror.
"No... no, no, no!" Julian shrieked, clutching his head. "This can't be happening! My career! My money!"
Nathaniel, sitting against the wall with his hands zip-tied behind his back, looked up as I walked into the room. Despite the cut on his forehead and his bruised frame, his blue eyes were glowing with immense pride and triumph.
"You lost, Julian," Nathaniel said softly, his voice steady as iron. "An eight-year-old girl in a patched dress just dismantled your entire life."
Julian snapped his head toward me, his eyes filled with pure, unhinged malice. "You..." he spat, raising his pistol and aiming it directly at my chest. "You ruined everything!"
"JULIAN GRAVES! DROP YOUR WEAPON!"
CRASH!
The massive glass windows of the executive vault exploded inward in a shower of shimmering safety glass.
Three heavily armed SWAT officers rappelled down from the roof through the shattered windows, landing on the floor with tactical precision.
Before Julian could pull the trigger, a flashbang grenade exploded at his feet with a blinding light and a deafening bang.
Julian shrieked, dropping his gun and collapsing onto his knees, clutching his eyes in agony. Within two seconds, three officers tackled him to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and slamming heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Target secured! Target secured!" an officer shouted into his shoulder microphone.
A second team of federal agents rushed over to Nathaniel, cutting his zip-ties and tending to the cut on his head.
Nathaniel pushed the paramedics away, pushing himself up from the floor, his eyes searching the room until they landed on me.
"Ruby!" he called out, his voice cracking.
I dropped my backpack and ran across the glass-strewn floor as fast as my small legs could carry me, throwing my arms around his neck. Nathaniel lifted me into his arms, pulling me tight against his chest, burying his face in my hair as he wept openly in front of dozens of federal agents.
"You saved us, sweetheart," Nathaniel sobbed, holding me so tight I could feel his heartbeat steadying against mine. "You saved us all."

"I kept the wallet safe, Grandpa," I whispered, holding up the black leather wallet.
Nathaniel laughed—a loud, joyful, tearful sound that echoed through the ruined vault. "Keep it, Ruby. Everything in it, and everything in this building, belongs to you and your mother now."
