Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing

Three days later, the Denver County Courthouse was packed with press reporters. The story of the "Aspen Widower"—the wealthy executive who abandoned his dying wife for a birthday bash—had gone viral across national media.

Ryan sat at the defense table, wearing a orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at the waist. His slicked-back hair was messy, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. Beside him sat his high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Harrison Vance (a cousin he had hired using company emergency funds).

Across the courtroom sat Emma, dressed in a sharp navy-blue suit, her skin pale but her posture straight and regal. Beside her sat Victoria Hayes, her attorney, along with Marcus.

"All rise for Judge Robert Sterling," the bailiff announced.

Judge Sterling took his seat, eyeing Ryan with severe distaste. "We are here for the bail hearing of State of Colorado v. Ryan Vance. The defendant is charged with Felony Reckless Child Endangerment and Criminal Negligence Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury."

Harrison Vance immediately stood up. "Your Honor, my client is a prominent businessman with deep roots in this community. He has no prior criminal record. The events of last week were an unfortunate medical emergency that occurred while my client was out of town on a pre-scheduled trip. He had no idea his wife was in medical distress. We request bail be set at a reasonable $50,000 so he can return to his business."

"No idea?" Victoria Hayes stood up smoothly, holding a tablet connected to the court's projector screen. "Your Honor, with the court's permission, I submit State's Exhibit A: home security camera footage from the hallway outside the nursery, recorded ten minutes before the defendant left for the airport."

The screen lit up.

The courtroom gasped as the video played. Ryan was clearly visible adjusting his sweater in the mirror while Emma sat on the floor in the background, blood visible on her legs, begging him for help: “Please... I think I need a hospital.”

And Ryan’s voice rang through the court speakers with crystal clarity: “Stop being a drama queen. It’s my birthday weekend. I’m not letting your heavy period ruin it. Don’t call me unless the house is actually on fire.”

Then came Exhibit B: the Aspen Instagram video of Ryan laughing and drinking whiskey while Emma lay unconscious.

The public gallery erupted in whispers and gasps. Several jurors from prospective panels in the back looked horrified.

Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down, his face thunderous. "Silence in the court!"

He looked down at Ryan, who was cowering in his seat, trying to avoid the judge's burning gaze.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling said, his voice dripping with icy disdain. "You demonstrated a level of callous disregard for human life that borders on sociopathic. You left a hemorrhaging woman and an infant without care so you could ski."

"Your Honor, please!" Ryan whimpered, standing up frantically. "I didn't know it was that serious! I thought she was exaggerating! I love my family!"

"Do not speak in my courtroom without permission!" Judge Sterling barked. "Given your substantial financial resources, flight risk, and the severe nature of these felony charges, bail is DENIED. You will remain in custody at the Denver Detention Center pending trial!"

"No! No! You can't keep me here!" Ryan screamed as two bailiffs grabbed him by the arms, dragging him back toward the holding cells. "Emma! Tell them! Emma, please! I'm sorry! I'll pay for the carpet! I'll buy you whatever you want! EMMA!"

Emma stood calmly, watching her husband thrash in panic until the iron door slammed shut behind him.
