Chapter 6 - A Brand New Day

The soft hum of hospital monitors was the most peaceful sound Sarah had ever heard.
She looked down at the tiny, perfect bundle cradled in her arms. Her daughter, Lily, had been born healthy and strong, unaffected by the storm they had escaped. Mark sat beside them, his hand resting gently on Sarah’s shoulder, a look of pure adoration on his face.
The door to the recovery room creaked open. Sarah’s breath hitched, but it wasn't Helena who stepped inside.
It was a young woman. She had Sarah’s identical green eyes, her wavy brown hair, and a soft, nervous smile. Clara.
"Hi," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "The hospital staff said I could come in."
After escaping her mother's house, Sarah had given Arthur's bank receipts to the police. An investigation quickly revealed the truth: Clara was alive. She had been born with mild developmental delays, and a young, status-obsessed Helena had shamefully hidden her away in an institution, lying to Sarah to keep her plagued by life-long guilt and compliance.
Tears streamed down Sarah's cheeks as she held out her hand. Clara walked over, tears in her own eyes, and took it. The missing piece of Sarah's heart instantly locked into place.

"Meet your niece, Clara," Sarah choked out, smiling through her tears.
Clara looked down at baby Lily, her face lighting up with pure, unadulterated joy. For the first time in her life, Sarah felt completely safe, completely whole, and entirely free. The shadows of the past were finally gone, replaced by the bright, beautiful promise of a new beginning.
