Danielle sat on the back bumper of an ambulance, a shock blanket draped over her shoulders. Amara was tucked securely under her right arm, entirely unharmed. Mia, who had been brought to the scene by her aunt, was tucked under Danielle’s left arm, her sprained ankle propped up on a medical kit.

Marcus stood in front of them, speaking with the detective as Silas was shoved into the back of a squad car, his extortion and kidnapping charges guaranteeing he would never see the outside of a prison cell again.

Marcus walked over, kneeling down on the asphalt in front of his family. He reached out, gently wiping a smudge of dirt from Danielle’s cheek.

"It's over," Marcus whispered, his eyes shining with profound respect and overwhelming love. "The ghosts are gone."

Danielle looked at Marcus, then down at Mia and Amara. They were bruised, exhausted, and covered in rooftop gravel. But as Amara leaned her head against Mia’s shoulder, and Mia instinctively wrapped her arm around her little sister, Danielle saw the absolute, unbreakable truth.
