Chapter 6 - The Federal Trap

Chaos erupted on the lawn of Whitmore House.

While the local police officers stood frozen in confusion—having spent the last twenty minutes comforting a supposed grieving family—the federal agents moved with ruthless, coordinated precision.

Two agents tackled Marcus Vance before he could draw his concealed weapon, pinning him face-down onto the damp grass as handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, metallic snap.

“Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? My family owns half of Connecticut!” Marcus roared, thrashing against the grass as a federal agent pressed a knee into his spine.

“That’s exactly why we’re here, Mr. Vance,” the lead federal agent replied coldly, standing over him.

Victoria Whitmore didn't run. She stood frozen in her pristine white cashmere coat, her knees visibly shaking as she stared past the arresting agents straight at Noah. Her manicured hands clawed nervously at her collar, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

“Noah...” she choked out, forcing a sickly, trembling smile onto her face as she took a tentative step forward. “Darling... thank God you’re alive. We thought you were trapped. We tried to save you, didn't we, Marcus? The smoke was just too thick—”

“Save it for the judge, Victoria,” a calm, deep voice interrupted from behind her.

Victoria spun around. Stepping out from the shadow of a parked fire truck was a man she hadn't expected to see in Greenwich for at least another week: Thomas Sterling, Senior Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s White-Collar and Organized Crime Division.

And in his hand, Agent Sterling wasn't holding a warrant for the fire.

He was holding a thick stack of stolen documents, medical ledgers, and financial wire transfers.

“You didn't try to save him, Mrs. Whitmore,” Agent Sterling said, his eyes locking onto hers with unyielding contempt. “In fact, our cybercrime division intercepted your wire transfers to an offshore Swiss account less than an hour ago—transfers designed to liquidate the entire Whitmore trust the moment the death certificate was signed.”

Victoria’s jaw worked silently, no words coming out. The mask had completely shattered.

Agent Sterling turned his attention toward the luggage cart where Noah sat beside Evelyn. The federal investigator walked over, crouching down until he was eye-level with the boy. He offered a gentle, reassuring nod.

“You safe now, son?” Agent Sterling asked softly.

Noah nodded, swallowing hard. He looked up at Evelyn, who placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Evelyn saved me. And she brought the books from the hidden room.”

“We know, Noah,” Agent Sterling smiled. He stood up, signaling two female agents to step forward. “Mrs. Whitmore, you have the right to remain silent...”

As Victoria was placed in handcuffs and led toward an unmarked federal sedan, the gathered dinner guests—the same elites who had sipped champagne with her an hour ago—backed away in disgust, whispering among themselves as the true face of the Whitmore dynasty was finally exposed to the world.
