Chapter 2 - The Hospital and the Hidden Contract

The flashing red and blue lights of the emergency room corridor reflected off the white tiled walls. Julian sat on a plastic waiting chair, his hands covered in dried blood—Clara’s blood.
He had refused to wash it off. It was a physical reminder of his own failure to protect her.
For six months, Julian had kept Clara hidden in a secluded coastal cottage. He had married her in a private, legal ceremony known only to a trusted lawyer, wanting to shield her from the ruthless corporate enemies of the Vance Group. Clara was the daughter of a simple academic, a woman of pure heart and gentle spirit, completely unequipped for the viper’s nest of high society.
But Vanessa, driven by jealousy and greed, had hunted Clara down. She had lured Clara to the family’s ancestral mansion under the guise of an "urgent medical emergency regarding Julian," only to trap her, strip her of her shoes and phone, and demand she sign a document forfeiting her rights to the Vance family fortune and her unborn child.
The door to the operating theater swung open. Dr. Evans, the head of obstetrics, stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask.
Julian was on his feet in a fraction of a second. "How are they?"
"The baby’s heart rate has stabilized, Julian," Dr. Evans said, offering a reassuring, tired smile. "The physical trauma to Clara’s abdomen was minimal because she protected her womb so fiercely. However, her hand has multiple hairline fractures from the heel pressure, and she has suffered severe emotional shock. We’ve administered mild sedatives. She is resting, but she’s asking for you."
Julian let out a long, shuddering breath he felt he had been holding for hours. "Can I see her?"
"Go on in. But keep her calm. Any sudden spikes in blood pressure could trigger premature labor."
Julian walked into the private suite. The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of the fetal heart monitor. Clara lay on the bed, her right hand heavily bandaged and elevated, her face pale but peaceful. When she saw him, a faint, fragile smile touched her lips.
"He's okay," Clara whispered, her left hand resting on her round belly. "I can feel him moving."
Julian walked over, sinking to his knees beside her bed. He took her uninjured hand and pressed it to his forehead, tears finally slipping down his face. "I am so sorry, Clara. I thought I had kept you safe. I thought keeping you separate from my world would protect you. I was a fool."
"It wasn't your fault," Clara murmured, her fingers gently brushing through his dark hair. "Vanessa... she had a document, Julian. She wanted me to sign over the baby. She said if I didn't, she would make sure your father's trust fund was dissolved, destroying everything you've built."
Julian’s eyes flashed with a cold, dangerous fire. "My father's trust fund is nothing compared to you and our son. And as of tonight, Vanessa and her family will realize they have absolutely nothing left to threaten me with."
The door opened quietly, and Arthur, Julian’s personal attorney, stepped in. He held a tablet displaying real-time financial markets.

"Mr. Vance," Arthur said quietly. "The security video of the assault was leaked to the media twenty minutes ago. It has already gone viral. The public outrage is unprecedented. The stock of Vanessa’s family company, the Sterling Group, is currently in a freefall. They’ve lost four hundred million dollars in after-hours trading alone."
"Good," Julian said, his voice flat and devoid of mercy. "Initiate the hostile takeover of Sterling Group. Buy up every share of their distressed stock. By tomorrow morning, I want Vanessa’s father to wake up and realize he works for me."
