Chapter 6 - Breaking the Gates

The front door swung open almost immediately.
Sharon stood in the foyer, looking triumphant, holding a mug of tea with a smug little smile playing on her lips. Behind her, Melanie peered around the corner like a spectator at a gladiatorial arena, while Lawrence sat solemnly on the living room sofa, staring at the floor in absolute shame.
“Well,” Sharon said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “Look what the cat dragged in. Did you finally read the Facebook group, Thomas? Did your wife finally confess the truth about her little golden ticket?”
I stepped past Thomas into the entryway, my chin held high, letting the raw fury inside me completely wash away the fear.
“You wrote that post, didn't you, Melanie?” I asked, my voice cutting through the foyer like a razor blade.
Melanie stepped out into the light, crossing her arms with a defensive smirk. “I didn't write anything that isn't common knowledge around this town! Everyone knows the girl isn't Thomas’s real flesh and blood! You trapped him, and now you’ve poisoned him against his own family just because Mom told the truth!”
“The truth?” Thomas stepped forward, towering over his sister with an intensity that made Melanie instantly shrink back. “You call public slander and vindictive harassment ‘the truth’? You think destroying an innocent six-year-old child’s reputation online is going to force me to pay your mortgage?”
“You have to pay our mortgage!” Sharon shrieked, losing her cool facade as she slammed her teacup down onto the console table. “We are your family! That house is your inheritance! You owe everything you have to us!”
“I owe you nothing!” Thomas roared, his voice shaking the family portraits hanging on the hallway wall.
He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and tossed it onto the console table right in front of Sharon.
“What... what is this?” Sharon stammered, her fingers trembling as she touched the edge of the envelope.
“That,” Thomas said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal whisper, “is a formal cease-and-desist letter prepared by my attorney for cyber-harassment and defamation of character. It also includes the official legal paperwork revoking any and all future claims to my estate, my business, and my personal assets.”
Melanie gasped, lunging forward. “You can’t do that! You’re our brother! You can’t cut us off completely over a Facebook post!”
“I just did,” Thomas replied without blinking. “And if that Facebook post isn’t deleted within the next ten minutes, along with a public retraction and apology posted by you, Melanie, my lawyer will file a civil lawsuit tomorrow morning that will strip this house right out from under you.”

Sharon stared at her son, her face turning a sickly, ghostly pale. For the first time in her life, she realized that her son was no longer the obedient, guilt-ridden boy she could manipulate with tears and financial blackmail.
He was a protector. He was a father. And he was entirely, irreversibly gone from their control.
