Chapter 4 - The Black Drive

"Hang up that phone!" Beatrice shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating. She rushed around the table toward me, her hands outstretched. "Are you insane? You will ruin us! Call them back and tell them it was an accident!"
Arthur stood up, his face dark with fury. "Ashley, think about what you are doing. We can settle this. We can pay for your medical bills. We can buy you another condo! Just hang up the phone!"
Adrian stepped closer, his chest heaving, his eyes darting toward the double doors of the dining room as if he could already hear the sirens. "Ashley, I swear to God, if you don't hang up right now—"
"Take one more step," I said, my voice dropping to a flat, dangerous register. I pointed my bloody phone directly at his face. "Take one more step, Adrian, and I will tell the dispatcher that you are currently threatening to kill me. Let's see how your father's lawyers handle an active domestic hostage situation."
Adrian froze. For the first time since I had met him, he looked truly, deeply terrified. The illusion of his absolute power was cracking.
Then, someone did the unexpected.
Maya.
My brother-in-law's wife, who had sat in terrified silence the entire evening, suddenly stood up. Her face was pale, and her hands were shaking so violently she could barely hold her purse. But she walked around the table and stepped directly between Adrian and me.
She stood like a shield, her back to me, facing the wrath of the Caldwell family.
"Don't come any closer to her, Adrian," Maya said, her voice soft but filled with a sudden, desperate bravery.
"Maya, what the hell are you doing?" her husband, Thomas, growled, standing up and grabbing her arm. "Sit down! Get away from her!"
"No!" Maya cried, wrenching her arm free from his grip. "I won't sit down! I won't watch this happen again!"
In the distance, the faint, wailing sound of police sirens began to drift through the open windows, traveling over the quiet vineyards.
The dining room erupted into chaos. Relatives began hurrying toward the exits, desperate to leave before the police arrived. Others huddled in corners, whispering frantically, rehearsing their lies, making sure their stories matched.
In the middle of the panic, Maya turned around to face me.
Her eyes were wide, filled with a terrifying mixture of fear and urgency. She reached into her pocket, took my hand, and pressed a small, cold object into my bloody palm.
I looked down. It was a tiny, unmarked black flash drive.
"This isn't the first time this family has covered up something like this," Maya whispered, her voice so low only I could hear it over the rising panic in the room. "They think they are untouchable. But this... this is what they are truly afraid of."
"Maya, what is this?" I breathed, my head throbbing intensely.
"No matter what happens tonight, Ashley," she whispered, her eyes pleading. "Do not let them get this back. If they find out you have it, they won't just throw a plate. They will make sure you never speak again."
Before I could ask another question, the heavy front doors of the estate were kicked open.
"Sheriff's Department! Nobody move!"

Several deputies flooded the foyer, their flashlights cutting through the elegant dimness of the Caldwell home.
I gripped the flash drive tightly, slipping it deep into the pocket of my jeans, letting my blood-soaked sleeve fall over it as the paramedics rushed into the room.
