Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL FIRE

I chased Victor into the smoke.
He shoved the crib through the emergency doors and down a service ramp. Lily and Grace were crying beneath clear oxygen hoods.
“Victor!”
He glanced back.
The firefighter helmet shadowed his face, but I knew the way he moved.
I knew the slight hitch in his left leg from an old riding accident.
I had helped him through that injury.
Now he was stealing my children.
He reached the ambulance bay where a black van waited with its rear doors open.
Two armed men stood beside it.
I stopped behind a concrete column.
Victor lifted Grace.
One gunman reached for Lily.
A shot cracked through the bay.
The gunman fell.
Sheriff Brooks emerged from the smoke with her weapon raised.
“Put the babies down!”
Victor held Grace against his chest and pressed a pistol beneath her blanket.
Elena froze.
“You shoot me, the weapon fires.”
My body went cold.
“Victor,” I said. “Give her to me.”
He looked at me almost sadly.
“You were never supposed to see the video.”
“Why did you sedate Sophie?”
“To make Emma look responsible.”
“You shut off the heat.”
“Yes.”
“You were willing to kill them.”
“No. I calculated the temperature decline. Emma was meant to find them before it became fatal.”
Emma appeared behind Elena carrying Sophie.
Rebecca and two nurses followed.
Victor smiled when he saw her.
“There is my missing asset.”
Emma held Sophie closer.
“I’m not property.”
“Everyone is property to someone.”
“You murdered my biological mother’s hope.”
“Laura was weak.”
I charged him.
Victor fired.
The bullet struck the column beside my head.
Elena shot the second gunman while I slammed Victor against the van.
Grace slipped from his arms.
Emma dove forward and caught her before she hit the pavement.
Victor drove his pistol into my shoulder.
Pain exploded down my arm.
I struck him twice.
He laughed, blood pouring from his nose.
“You were always stronger than me, Daniel. That’s why I had to make you helpless.”
He reached for Grace again.
Rebecca stepped between them.
Victor raised his weapon.
Emma screamed.
The shot rang out.
Rebecca staggered.
A red stain spread across her side.
Elena fired.
Victor fell against the van, clutching his thigh.
Deputies flooded the ambulance bay.
I dropped beside Rebecca.
Emma placed Grace safely in a nurse’s arms and knelt beside the woman who had raised her.
“Mom.”
Rebecca struggled to breathe.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“Don’t talk.”
“I wanted to come back.”
“You’re here now.”
“I never stopped being your mother.”
Emma pressed both hands against the wound.
“You are my mother. You hear me? You don’t get to leave again.”
Paramedics lifted Rebecca onto a stretcher.
Victor was dragged past us.
He looked at Emma and smiled despite his wound.
“The bank box is empty.”
I grabbed him.
“What did you say?”
“Claire arrived too late. I reached Geneva first.”
“You’re lying.”
“Ask the bank.”
He leaned closer.
“Your wife died believing she had failed.”
I hit him before the deputies pulled us apart.
The fire was extinguished within an hour. It had been deliberately started in a supply closet to trigger evacuation procedures.
Margaret withdrew her custody petition that afternoon.
She stood outside the operating room while surgeons worked to save Rebecca.
“I was wrong,” she said.
“That does not repair anything.”
“No.”
She looked at Emma sitting with my daughters.
“But I intend to testify against Victor. Your father’s ledgers still exist.”
“You kept them?”
“I kept every record because one day I hoped I would become brave enough to expose him.”
“One day came too late for Laura.”
My mother accepted the words.
“Yes.”
Emma joined us.
“Rebecca is stable,” she said. “The bullet missed her liver.”
Relief softened her face for only a moment.
Then she turned to Margaret.
“I need you to tell me everything about my mother.”
Margaret nodded.
“I will.”
“No more polished versions. No protecting the family name.”
“The family name deserves no protection.”
Emma looked surprised.
Margaret removed the Whitmore signet ring from her finger and placed it on the table.
“My husband used this name as a weapon. Victor used it as currency. Perhaps it is time we earned it back.”
That night, the hospital transferred the triplets to a guarded private wing.
I sat beside Emma while she held Sophie.
“You saved them twice,” I said.
“I only did what anyone should have done.”
“No one else did.”
She looked down.
“Why did Claire trust me?”
“Perhaps she knew what kind of person you were before either of us did.”
Emma was quiet.
“Do you believe Victor emptied the bank box?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire was smarter than Victor.”
A nurse entered carrying a package delivered by bonded courier.
It bore a Swiss bank seal.
Inside was a brass key and a handwritten letter.
Daniel and Emma,
If you are reading this together, then Victor failed to keep you apart.
The vault is not in Switzerland.
May you like
It is beneath Willow Creek.
And the person who killed me is still living inside your family.
