Chapter 3 - The Price of Redemption

Before Vasquez could process my words, a massive explosion rocked the ceiling above us.

It wasn't his C4. It was thermite charges placed by Victor on the main structural beams directly above the sub-basement. Tons of wet concrete, steel mesh, and burning metal rained down in a blinding shower of sparks and deafening noise.

The sudden shockwave threw Vasquez off balance. His thumb slipped from the detonator switch for a fraction of a second.

That fraction was all I needed.

I fired twice. The first round shattered his right wrist, sending the gold-plated pistol clattering across the floor. The second round slammed into his left shoulder, severing the nerve cluster and forcing his hand to open. The detonator tumbled through the air.

I lunged forward, catching the detonator inches before it struck the ground, sliding across the wet concrete floor, and instantly disarming the secondary safety switch with my knife blade.

Vasquez screamed in agony, clutching his ruined arm as he fell against the back wall. Blood pooled around his pristine white trousers.

I didn't give him a chance to recover. I stood over him, my boot pressing heavily onto his chest, pinning him to the floor.

"You... you can't kill me..." Vasquez gasped, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "My men... my family... they'll hunt that little girl to the ends of the earth..."

"Your men are already dead, Ricardo," Victor’s voice came through my restored earpiece as my tactical team flooded the room, securing the perimeter and cutting Elena's restraints. "The upper floors are clear. The port is ours."

I looked down at Vasquez. The man who had stolen eight years of my life was shrinking into a pathetic pile of blood and ruined pride.

"You made a mistake eight years ago," I said, leaning down so my face was inches from his. "You should have killed me when you blew up that house. Instead, you left me alive, and you let my daughter remember my face."

I pulled the silver wolf ring from my finger and pressed it hard into the center of his forehead, leaving a bruised, bloody imprint of the wolf's head.

"This is from Mia," I whispered.

A single shot echoed through the concrete basement.

The chaos settled instantly. The smoke from the thermite cleared, replaced by the cool sea air rushing in through the newly created gap in the roof.

I turned around.

Elena was standing with Victor’s support, her eyes wide, staring at me through tears that washed clean tracks down her dusty face. Her hands were shaking violently as the reality of her freedom washed over her.

I walked toward her slowly, every step feeling heavier than the last. The cold, ruthless Don who had ruled an empire with blood and iron vanished with every inch I closed between us.

"Elena," I breathed.

She didn't speak. She reached out, her hand trembling as her fingers touched my cheek, feeling the warm skin, tracing the faint scars that hadn't been there eight years ago.

"You're real..." she sobbed, collapsing into my chest. "I thought... I thought he was lying to me. He told me you died three years ago. He told me he was going to turn Mia into..."

"She's safe," I cut her off, wrapping my arms tightly around her, holding her against my body as if the wind might blow her away again. "She's safe, Elena. She's at the high-rise. She has your bracelet. She called me Daddy."

Elena buried her face into my shoulder, her body shaking with uncontrollable sobs that shattered the quiet night. I lifted her up into my arms, carrying her out of the blood-stained basement, past the bodies, out into the clean, cold rain of the night.

As we reached the waiting armored SUV, Victor approached, offering a towel and a radio handset.

"Boss," Victor said quietly, a faint smile breaking through his stern expression. "The safehouse just called. The little girl won't go to sleep. She says she's waiting for her parents."

Elena looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of raw pain and overwhelming hope.

"Take us home, Adriano," she whispered. "Take us home."
