Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

By Monday morning, Ryan and Linda’s world began to fracture.
They had assumed that because they were civilians, my father’s military rank meant nothing. They believed they could hide behind expensive local lawyers and drag the case through a slow, bureaucratic civil court system.
They did not understand how the military machine operated when one of its own was harmed.
At 9:00 AM, my father met with Detective Marcus Stone of the Chicago Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. Together with a military legal liaison, they presented the medical records, the digital recordings of Ryan’s threatening phone calls, and my own comprehensive, sworn statement.
"This is an open-and-shut case of aggravated domestic battery, Colonel," Detective Stone said, reviewing the photographs of my bruises. "And with the victim being seven months pregnant, it elevates to a Class 4 felony in the state of Illinois. We are issuing an arrest warrant for Ryan Pendelton immediately."
"And the mother?" my father asked. "Linda Pendelton. She acted as an accomplice, restricting my daughter's movement, withholding medical care, and assisting in the cover-up."
"We’re bringing her in for questioning as well," Stone replied. "Abetment of a felony, unlawful restraint. We’ll squeeze her. Women like Linda usually break the moment they see a pair of handcuffs."
Meanwhile, my father’s legal team struck another blow. Ryan worked as a financial analyst for a major defense contractor—a company that relied heavily on federal military contracts.
My father made a single, official phone call to the company's regional director, requesting a security clearance review of Ryan Pendelton due to an active federal investigation involving domestic violence and financial exploitation of a military dependent.
By noon, Ryan was escorted out of his office building in handcuffs.
His security clearance had been suspended, and his employer, terrified of losing their multi-million-dollar government contracts, suspended him indefinitely without pay.
When Linda heard of her son's arrest, she panicked. She tried to access the joint bank account she shared with Ryan to post his bail, only to find that the account had been frozen. My father’s legal liaison had secured an emergency freezing order on all marital assets, citing the active investigation into the embezzlement of my military allotment funds.
I watched the news of their arrest from my hospital bed, a strange mix of relief and anxiety washing over me. For months, I had been the one trapped in a cage. Now, the bars were closing around them.
That evening, my father returned to my room, carrying a cup of decaf tea. He looked tired, but his posture was as straight as ever.
"Ryan is in custody, Emily," he said, pulling up a chair. "They set his bail at $250,000. He can't afford it because his accounts are frozen and his mother’s assets are being audited. He’s going to spend the night in a county jail cell."
I took a sip of the tea, the warmth spreading through my chest. "He’s going to hate that. He always thought he was above everyone else."
"He is about to learn that he is beneath the law," my father said. "But we have to remain vigilant, sweetheart. His mother is trying to contact a high-profile defense attorney. They are going to try to paint you as the instigator. They will try to use your pregnancy against you, claiming you are emotionally unstable."

"Let them try," I said, looking down at my stomach, where I felt a soft, gentle kick. "I have you. And I have the truth."
My father smiled, a rare, genuine expression of pride. "That’s my girl. We fight to the end."
