Chapter 6 - The Voice of the Angel

For two days, Castellano Manor was under total lockdown.
Iris was trapped in her second-floor suite, weeping quietly by the window. She didn't care about the guards outside her door or the threat of prison. What shattered her soul was the coldness in Victor’s eyes—the realization that the fragile trust they had built over months had been shattered in a single night.
Downstairs, Victor was losing his mind. He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His men had searched every inch of Chicago, but the stolen ledger remained missing.
Suddenly, a quiet knock sounded at Victor’s study door.
Mrs. Croft stepped inside, her face drawn, holding a tablet computer. "Mr. Castellano... I was reviewing the secondary security backups. The ones stored on the offline server in the greenhouse wing."
Victor sat up instantly. "What did you find?"
"The digital keypad in the basement wasn't hacked from the inside," Mrs. Croft said, her voice shaking. "It was cloned using a master transmitter. And three minutes before the vault alarm sounded, a delivery vehicle from a medical supply company left the rear gates."
Victor stood up, his dark eyes ablaze. "Who cleared the medical truck?"
Mrs. Croft swallowed hard. "Marco. Your chief of security."
Victor felt a cold shock hit his spine. Marco—the man who had stood by his side for ten years, the man who had 'found' Iris’s bracelet on the safe door—was the traitor. Marco had stolen Iris’s bracelet from the laundry room earlier that day, planted it in the vault, and used a cloned keycode to frame her, giving Julian Moretti the master ledger.
Before Victor could call his guards, a loud, panicked scream echoed from the second floor.
"Fire! The East Wing is on fire!"
Victor sprinted out of his study like a madman. Thick, black smoke was pouring down the grand staircase from the second floor. Marco, realizing his cover was blown, had set fire to the nursery wing to create a distraction and escape the estate!
"Iris!" Victor roared, lunging through the heavy smoke, coughing violently as flames licked the oak walls. "IRIS!"
He reached the second-floor corridor. The guest suite where Iris was locked was surrounded by a wall of roaring flames. The guards had fled the smoke, but inside the room, Iris was slamming her hands against the heavy oak door.
"Victor! Help!" she screamed through the crack in the door.
"Stand back from the door!" Victor yelled. He took three steps back and slammed his heavy shoulder against the door with all his strength. The wood splintered. He slammed into it a second time, shattering the frame, falling into the smoke-filled room.
He grabbed Iris, pulling her into his arms. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, Iris!" he choked out through the thick smoke. "I know it wasn't you!"
"Leo!" Iris screamed, pushing past her own panic. "Where is Leo?!"
Victor’s heart stopped. In his panic to reach Iris, he had assumed the guards had evacuated his son!
They sprinted down the burning hallway toward the nursery. The nursery door was wide open, flames crawling up the curtains. Inside, four-year-old Leo was trapped in the corner of the room, clutching Mr. Bumbles, surrounded by a ring of fire, thick smoke choking his tiny lungs.
"LEO!" Victor screamed, trying to dive through the wall of fire, but a burning beam collapsed from the ceiling, blocking his path, scorching his arm.
Iris didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy woolen blanket from the linen cart, dumped a vase of water over it, wrapped it around herself, and leapt over the burning beam, diving directly into the fire.
"Iris! No!" Victor roared, trying to kick the burning wood away.
Inside the burning corner, Iris wrapped the wet blanket around Leo, pulling the small boy tight against her chest. But the smoke was too thick; her vision was fading fast. She collapsed onto her knees, shielding Leo with her own body as hot embers rained down around them.
"Iris... wake up!" Victor screamed, frantically tearing away the burning wooden beam with his bare, bleeding hands.
Leo felt the heat, felt the smoke, and felt the woman who had brought him back to life collapsing over him, willing to die to keep him safe. The trauma, the fear, the eight months of dark silence inside his soul suddenly shattered under the weight of absolute, unconditional love.
Leo pressed his small face against Iris’s neck. Tears streamed down his soot-covered cheeks.
He opened his tiny mouth, and for the first time in eight long months, a sound broke through the roaring flames—a clear, beautiful, loud voice that echoed through the burning room.
"DADDY! SAVE HER! DADDY, HELP US!"
Outside the wall of fire, Victor froze for a fraction of a second, tears bursting from his eyes as his son's voice pierced his very soul.
Driven by a primal, superhuman strength, Victor grabbed the burning beam with both bare hands, throwing it aside, lunging into the flames. He scooped up both Iris and Leo into his massive arms, charging out of the burning nursery, sprinting down the grand staircase, and bursting out through the heavy front doors onto the cool, rain-slicked lawn.
Epilogue: A Promise Kept
Six months later.
The summer sun washed over the restored, magnificent gardens of Castellano Manor. The scars of the fire had been completely erased, replaced by blooming red roses and sparkling marble fountains.
Marco and Julian Moretti were serving life sentences in federal prison after Victor’s legal team recovered the stolen ledger and exposed their entire syndicate operation to the authorities. The Moretti family empire in Chicago was completely dismantled, its assets seized, its threats permanently erased.
On the grand terrace overlooking the lawn, forty-two of Chicago's most powerful men—politicians, business leaders, and community elders—stood in clean tuxedos, sipping champagne. But this time, there was no fear in the air. Only profound respect.
Standing at the altar beneath an arch of white lilies was Victor Castellano. He looked breathtaking in a sharp, tailored tuxedo, his eyes shining with a deep, peaceful warmth that no one had ever seen in him before.
Beside him stood four-year-old Leo, wearing a miniature matching tuxedo, holding a tiny ring pillow. He wasn't hiding. He was smiling, holding his father's hand, chatting happily with the wedding guests.
"Look, Daddy! Here comes Mommy!" Leo giggled, pointing toward the marble steps.
The grand doors opened.
Iris walked down the aisle, wearing a simple, breathtaking gown of white lace. Her hair was styled in soft waves, and on her wrist, sparkling under the summer sun, was her daughter Maya’s pink glass bead bracelet—restored and polished by the finest jeweler in the city.
She looked radiant, free from the burdens of her past, her brown eyes shining with absolute love as she looked at Victor.
When she reached the altar, Victor took both her hands in his. His large, scarred fingers trembled slightly with raw emotion.
"Eight months ago, I stood before this city and made a promise," Victor said, his baritone voice carrying across the quiet terrace, echoing with deep sincerity. "I promised half of everything I own to the person who made my son speak. I thought I was offering a reward. But I was wrong."
He leaned in, looking into Iris’s eyes, a tear rolling down his cheek.
"You didn't just make my son speak, Iris. You gave him his soul back. You gave me my life back. Half of my empire means nothing. Today, I give you my whole heart, my whole life, and my eternal protection."
Iris smiled through her tears, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "And I give you mine, Victor. Forever."
The priest smiled warmly. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Victor pulled Iris into his arms, dipping her gently as he kissed her lips—a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the bright blue sky.
Around them, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Down at their feet, little Leo cheered, dropping his ring pillow, reaching up to wrap his small arms around both of their legs.

"I love you, Mommy! I love you, Daddy!" Leo shouted happily over the cheers.
Victor and Iris picked up their son together, holding him between them, as the bright summer sunshine bathed the new family in a warm, eternal light—a promise kept, a silence broken, and a love that had healed them all.
