Chapter 2: The Silent Ward

I woke up two days later in a room that smelled of antiseptic and safety. The fever had broken, but the anger was still burning, colder and sharper than before.

My doctor, a woman with tired eyes and a fierce expression, sat by my bed. "You had a severe post-operative infection, Claire. If you hadn't collapsed when you did, you wouldn't be here. Your husband told the nurses you were 'forgetful' with your medication. He said you were struggling with mental health issues."

I stared at the ceiling. Mental health. The ultimate weapon of a man who wants to silence a woman.

"He lied," I said, my voice raspy.

"I know," the doctor replied, sliding a folder across the tray. "Your blood work shows you haven't had a single dose of antibiotics in forty-eight hours. The nurses found the records of your discharge instructions, and they’ve already filed a report with hospital security regarding the neglect. But there’s something else."

She leaned in. "Mr. Harrison’s assistant dropped this off for you. He asked that you look at it the moment you were conscious."

It was a transcript. A record of the entire night, recorded by the home security system that Mark insisted on installing to "keep an eye on the house." It had everything: Linda’s insults, Mark’s refusal to give me the painkillers, and the moment he told me to "clean myself up" before the guests arrived.

Mr. Harrison hadn't just fired Mark; he had documented his moral bankruptcy.
