Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Court

The steps of the Cook County Judicial Center were slick with morning frost as a fleet of news vans parked along the curb. Word of a high-profile vulnerable adult abuse case involving state Medicaid fraud had leaked to the press by mid-afternoon.

Jonah stood on the top marble step, flanked by a high-priced defense attorney named Richard Sterling—a man known across the city for getting wealthy abusers off on technicalities. Jonah was wearing a crisp grey suit, his knuckles covered with skin-colored makeup, trying his best to look like an innocent, wrongfully accused stepfather.

My mother stood beside him, clutching a leather handbag, her face hidden behind thick dark sunglasses.

As I walked up the steps carrying my forensic briefcase, Richard Sterling stepped forward to block my path.

"Ms. Carter," Sterling said, his voice dripping with condescending warmth. "A word before we step into the arraignment room?"

I stopped, looking Sterling up and down. "You have thirty seconds, counselor."

"My clients are prepared to offer a full civil settlement," Sterling said in a low tone, stepping closer so the reporters couldn't hear. "Evelyn will sign over full legal guardianship of Chloe to you immediately. In exchange, you drop the Medicaid fraud charges and agree to tell the prosecutor that Chloe’s injuries were the result of a tragic household accident."

Jonah smirked behind his lawyer, leaning in slightly. "Be smart, Karina. Your mother won't survive a prison sentence. Do you really want to put your own mother behind bars over a broken nose?"

I looked past Sterling, meeting my mother’s hidden gaze behind her sunglasses.

"Did you approve this offer, Mom?" I asked softly.

My mother pulled her glasses down slightly, her eyes rimmed with red, filled with tears. "Karina... please. Jonah promise he'll get anger management. We can fix this quietly. Don't destroy our family's reputation."

"You destroyed this family the moment you let him lay a hand on my sister," I said coldly.

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out an iPad, and tapped the screen. A loud, crystal-clear audio recording began playing from the high-powered speaker—a recording captured by the voice-activated emergency app I had secretly installed on Chloe’s phone six months ago.

Jonah's voice echoed across the marble steps: "Shut up, you useless cripple! If you tell your sister about the money, I'll break your other leg!"

Chloe’s sobbing voice followed: "Please, Jonah! No!"

Then came the sickening sound of a heavy blow, followed by Jonah’s cruel laugh.

Jonah’s face drained of every ounce of color. Sterling froze, his mouth half-open, his legal strategy evaporating into thin air right in front of him.

The reporters at the bottom of the steps gasped, their cameras clicking in a frantic frenzy as they captured Jonah’s sudden, helpless panic.

"Where... where did you get that?" Jonah stammered, stepping back.

"I told you, Jonah," I said, stepping past them toward the heavy bronze doors of the courthouse. "I'm not a cop. I'm something much worse. I'm her sister."
