Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Shatters

The private dining room of the Club de Industriales was the playground of Mexicoâs ultra-wealthy.
Gold-plated silverware, crystal glasses, and the soft murmur of deals being made in whispers filled the air. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Arturo Serrano, Valeriaâs father, a powerful patriarch who had built his fortune on government contracts. Beside him sat several of the senior board members of Velasco International.
"NicolĂĄs is late," Arturo said, looking at his gold watch with a scowl. "A sign of his growing disregard for his partners. Ever since his mother left for 'health reasons,' the boy has lost his grip."
"He hasn't lost his grip, Arturo," a voice echoed from the doorway.
The double doors opened, and NicolĂĄs Velasco stepped into the room.
He was dressed in a flawless, bespoke charcoal-gray suit, radiating a cold, magnetic power. But it wasn't NicolĂĄs who drew the collective gasp from the room.
It was the woman on his arm.
SofĂa Reyes walked beside him, her head held high. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk gown that draped elegantly over her athletic frame. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing her graceful neck, and a simple but breathtaking diamond pendantâa personal gift from NicolĂĄsâglittered against her collarbone.
She did not look like a poor nurse from the General Hospital. She looked like a force of nature.
"NicolĂĄs," Arturo said, standing up, his eyes narrowing as he looked at SofĂa. "Who is your companion? I thought this dinner was for key stakeholders and family only."
"She is both," NicolĂĄs said, guiding SofĂa to the seat directly opposite Arturo. He sat down beside her, his hand instantly covering hers on the table in a public display of possession. "This is SofĂa Reyes. The woman who saved my sonâs life, and the new director of the Velasco Pediatric Foundation."
A murmur swept through the board members.
"A nurse?" one of the older men sneered. "NicolĂĄs, you cannot be serious. You bring a medical worker to a strategic board meeting? What does she know about shipping logistics or security assets?"
"She knows how to spot a poisoner," SofĂa spoke up, her voice calm, clear, and dripping with a quiet sarcasm that cut through the room like a scalpel. "Which is a skill that seems highly relevant to this board, given how many of you have been funding Doña Leonorâs private offshore accounts for the past five years."
The room fell into a deathly silence.
Arturo Serranoâs face turned a dangerous shade of red. "What nonsense is this? NicolĂĄs, control your woman."
"She is not a woman to be controlled, Arturo," NicolĂĄs said, his gray eyes turning to ice. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black tablet, sliding it across the polished wood of the table. "Alejandro has spent the last three weeks doing a forensic audit of my motherâs personal finances. It turns out, her 'German fabric softeners' weren't the only things she was importing."
The tablet displayed a series of bank transactions, linking Doña Leonorâs Swiss accounts to shell companies owned by three of the board members sitting at the tableâand Arturo Serrano himself.
"For years, you have been laundering money through our shipping lines, using my motherâs influence to bypass customs checks," NicolĂĄs said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "And when I began to investigate the discrepancies, you tried to use my sonâs illness to force me out of the company. You wanted me distracted so you could cover your tracks."
"This is a fabrication!" Arturo roared, slamming his fist on the table. "You have no proof!"
"Actually, we do," SofĂa said, leaning forward. "The chemical analysis of the pesticide used on Mateoâs clothes matched a shipment imported by one of your construction subsidiaries, Mr. Serrano. Itâs a restricted substance. Only a few people in this country have the permits to import it. And your signature is on the shipping manifest."
Arturo took a step back, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. He looked around the table, but the other board members were already looking away, desperate to distance themselves from a sinking ship.
"You are finished, Arturo," NicolĂĄs said, standing up and towering over the older man. "As of tonight, Velasco International is terminating all contracts with Serrano Construction. The evidence of your money laundering and chemical assault will be handed to the federal prosecutor in exactly ten minutes."
"You... you will destroy your own family's reputation!" Arturo gasped, his voice trembling. "The scandalâ"
May you like
"The only scandal," SofĂa said, standing up beside NicolĂĄs, "is that you thought you could hurt a child and get away with it because of your money."
Without another word, NicolĂĄs took SofĂaâs hand, and together, they walked out of the room, leaving the corrupt empire of the Serrano family to crumble behind them.
