Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at the Docks

The revelation shattered the last remnants of peace inside Adrian’s mind. The tragic explosion that had ruined his life and Sofia’s had not been a random tragedy or an unpreventable accident. It had been a calculated execution orchestrated by Dominick Vance—a plot that destroyed two families in a single morning.
Adrian closed the leather folder slowly, his face turning to stone once more. But this time, it wasn't the cold stone of despair; it was the sharp, lethal edge of a man preparing for war.
"Does Sofia know?" Adrian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"No, sir," Charles replied. "She still believes her husband died in a tragic accident while trying to disarm a malfunctioning car engine."
"Keep it that way for now," Adrian ordered. "She has suffered enough. Double the guard on the estate perimeter. No one enters or leaves without my personal clearance."
That evening, Adrian invited Sofia to join him for dinner in the small dining parlor off the kitchen—a room far less intimidating than the massive grand hall.
Sofia sat nervously across from him, while Emma slept peacefully in a crib that had been set up in the adjacent lounge. The soft light of the chandelier illuminated the contrast between them: Adrian in his sharp charcoal suit, and Sofia in a simple silk blouse that Charles had arranged for her.
"You look better tonight, Sofia," Adrian said gently, breaking the heavy silence.
"I... I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Moretti," Sofia said, looking down at her hands. "This afternoon, a lawyer called me. He told me all my debts to the collection agency had been cleared. He said the deed to my mother's old cottage in Indiana had been bought back and placed in my name."
She looked up, her brown eyes shining with tears. "That was you, wasn't it?"
Adrian took a sip of his wine, his expression unreadable. "It was a debt long overdue."
"It wasn't your debt to pay!" Sofia said, her voice rising slightly with genuine emotion. "Marco chose to work on those cars. He knew the risks. You didn't owe us our lives!"
"You don't understand, Sofia," Adrian murmured, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Your husband was a brave man. He died protecting my property... protecting my family. Because of him, I had three extra minutes to say goodbye to my wife before she passed in the hospital. I can never repay that."
Sofia stared at him, seeing beneath the terrifying myth of "Don Moretti" to the broken, grieving man who was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. She reached out across the table, her rough, hardworking fingers briefly covering his large, calloused hand.
"He would be happy to know you are taking care of us," Sofia whispered softly. "Marco always said you were a good man beneath the suit."
Adrian felt a jolt run through his heart at her touch. It had been three years since a woman had touched his hand with tenderness. He looked at her, seeing the beauty, the strength, and the quiet dignity that she had maintained through absolute hell.
Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the parlor burst open.
Mateo, Adrian’s chief security officer, rushed into the room, his face covered in sweat. "Boss! We have a breach at the southern gate!"
Adrian was on his feet in a second, his hand instantly going to his concealed weapon. "How many?"
"It’s a strike team," Mateo shouted over the sound of rising sirens outside the estate. "They cut the power lines! They’re using night-vision gear, and they’ve already taken down two guards at the perimeter!"
Sofia gasped, standing up and rushing toward the lounge where Emma was sleeping. "Emma!"
"Stay inside!" Adrian ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority. He grabbed Sofia by the shoulders, looking directly into her panicked eyes. "Take Emma and go to the safe room behind the library bookshelf. Charles knows the code. Do not come out until I come get you. Do you understand?"

"Adrian, please be careful!" Sofia cried out, using his first name for the very first time.
The sound of gunfire shattered the night outside, heavy automatic rounds slamming against the reinforced glass windows of the estate.
