Chapter 3 - Poison in the Well

The chaos that erupted in the grand ballroom was spectacular.

Before the security guards could reach me, Marcus and three off-duty officers he had hired for personal protection surrounded me, blocking any attempt by Damien’s men to intervene. The investors and board members were already walking out, their faces filled with disgust and alarm. The merger was dead in the water; no corporation on earth would touch a company whose current leadership was being publicly accused of murder by its deceased founder.

"You think you've won?" Damien hissed, pushing his way through the departing crowd until he stood just feet away from me, his face twisted in a rabid, desperate rage. "You’re a convicted felon, Daniel! Nobody is going to take your word over ours! That recording is nothing! It won't hold up in a court of law!"

"Maybe not on its own," I replied calmly, adjusting my cuffs. "But the medical records from the out-of-state clinic will. And so will the testimony of Dr. Sterling."

At the mention of the family doctor, Vanessa’s aristocratic mask completely shattered. Her skin turned a sickly, translucent white. "What did you do to Dr. Sterling?"

"I didn't do anything to him," I said. "I simply showed him the bank transfers Damien made to his private offshore account in the Bahamas—transfers that came directly from the Hale Enterprises charity fund. I told him he had twenty-four hours to cooperate with the federal prosecutors or go down as an accessory to first-degree murder. He chose the latter."

"You're bluffing!" Damien yelled, though the sweat pouring down his forehead betrayed his terror.

"Am I?" I pulled out my phone and tapped a button. A local news broadcast feed appeared on the main screen behind us.

“Breaking News: Dr. Richard Sterling, a prominent Portland physician, has surrendered to federal authorities this evening, confessing to his involvement in the falsification of the autopsy report of logistics tycoon Arthur Hale. Sources say Sterling has implicated Hale’s widow, Vanessa Hale, and her son, Damien, in a systematic poisoning scheme...”

"No..." Vanessa whispered, collapsing into a nearby chair, her emerald dress folding around her like a deflating balloon. "No, this can't be happening. We had everything planned. We were supposed to leave for Switzerland next week..."

"You're not going to Switzerland, Vanessa," I said, stepping closer. "And you're not keeping my father's house."

"Security! Get him!" Damien roared, lunging forward himself. But before he could reach me, the heavy glass doors of the hotel lobby flew open.

A dozen state police officers, led by Detective Miller’s replacement, Captain Ross, marched into the ballroom. They didn't look at me. They went straight to Damien and Vanessa.

"Vanessa Hale, Damien Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree murder, bank fraud, and grand larceny," Captain Ross announced, his voice booming.

As the metal handcuffs clicked around Damien’s wrists, he looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, animalistic hatred. "This isn't over, Daniel! You can't prove I did the actual poisoning! It was her! She made the food! She bought the chemicals!"

"Damien, you fool, shut up!" Vanessa shrieked as she was led away, her perfect hair falling into her face, her designer heels slipping on the spilled champagne. "I did it for you! I did it all for you!"

I stood in the center of the emptying ballroom, watching them argue and scream as they were dragged out into the flashing blue lights of the police cruisers.

The physical ache in my chest from my father's death was still there, but for the first time in three years, I felt a cool, refreshing breeze of justice begin to blow through my soul. But I knew the battle wasn't fully won. Vanessa and Damien still had high-priced corporate lawyers, and they still held the physical deed to my father’s house and his personal safe.

I needed to get back to the estate before their legal teams could lock it down.
