"Bail is denied," the judge announced, slamming the gavel down with a force that made Daniel flinch. "The defendant, Daniel Vance, will remain in custody pending trial. Furthermore, based on the evidence of interstate financial fraud and exploitation of federal credentials, this court is referring these files to the Federal Prosecutor’s office."
As the bailiffs grabbed Daniel to lead him away, he began to scream at his mother. "You told me we wouldn't get caught! You told me she was weak! You did this to me, Mother!"
Evelyn sat frozen as the reporters rushed toward her, their cameras flashing. She tried to push past them, but two federal marshals stepped into her path.
"Evelyn Vance," one of the marshals said loudly, ensuring every reporter heard. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, grand larceny, and embezzlement of charitable funds."
The socialites who had sat near Evelyn in the gallery immediately scattered, wanting nothing to do with the woman who was now the most hated figure in the state.
