Chapter 12 - The Garden of Beginnings

Six months later, the morning sun poured over the manicured flower beds of the Oakhaven estate, warming the rich, dark soil of the newly built raised garden beds in the backyard.
I knelt beside the wooden frame, smoothing down a patch of damp earth while my mother poured a gentle stream of water from a green plastic watering can over a row of sprouting heirloom tomato plants.

My phone buzzed gently in the pocket of my jeans. I pulled it out to check a notification from the State Attorney General’s Office—a final administrative sign-off confirming that the emergency elder protection grants funded by the recovered Oakhaven assets were officially active across three counties, helping hundreds of vulnerable seniors secure legal protection and financial safety.
I slipped the phone away and smiled up at my mother.
"Looks like the harvest is going to be incredible this year, Mom," I said, wiping a speck of dirt from my cheek.

She set the watering can down, resting her hands on her hips with a proud, contented smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She looked healthier, stronger, and more vibrant than she had in a decade.
"It always is," she replied softly, looking out over the peaceful suburban yard where no shadows lingered, and no locked doors remained. "When you plant things in the light, Elena... they always find a way to grow."
