Chapter 3 - The Bleeding Ledger

The private conference room on the third floor of the Morelli estate smelled of stale tobacco and panic.

Dante stood at the head of the long mahogany table, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were stark white. Across from him sat his lead legal counsel, Arthur Vance, and his head of security, Marco Duca.

“How is that possible?” Dante demanded, his voice slicing through the room like a razor. “Those shipping manifests are stored on an isolated, air-gapped server in the basement! The federal government shouldn't even know those terminals exist, let alone have the routing codes!”

Arthur Vance adjusted his glasses, his hands trembling as he flipped through a thick sheaf of printed enforcement documents. “Dante, it’s not just a standard audit. The EPA and the federal task force didn't stumble on this. They were handed a fully itemized, perfectly organized cross-reference index. Every single dock worker, every shell corporation, every bribe ledger... it’s all mapped out like a corporate training manual.”

“Who had access to the master administrative index?” Dante asked, though a cold dread was already settling in his chest.

Marco swallowed hard, exchanging a grim look with the lawyer. “Technically... nobody outside of your direct clearance level, Boss. But... well, you know how things actually work around here.”

“Speak, Marco,” Dante ordered dangerously.

“The administrative index was linked to the estate’s daily operational log,” Marco confessed, wiping sweat from his forehead. “Whenever a driver was delayed, whenever a customs clearance hit a snag, whenever a security shift overlapped with a freight delivery... Ivy used to cross-reference the master system to keep the household running smoothly. She had root-level administrative privileges on the estate’s internal network because she was the one who kept track of everything that fell through the cracks.”

Silence descended on the room.

Arthur Vance stared at Dante in disbelief. “You mean to tell me that a multi-billion-dollar international shipping empire and shadow syndicate was being kept stable by... by a maid?”

“She didn't hack the system, Arthur,” Dante said quietly, his mind racing back to every time he had seen Ivy quietly correcting a manifest error or updating a driver’s route on her own accord. “I gave her access years ago when the estate management software kept crashing and she was the only one who could fix the database architecture. She didn't steal the files. She just stopped cleaning up the mess.”

And by stopping, she had exposed the entire fragile ecosystem of the Morelli enterprise to the harsh, unforgiving light of federal scrutiny. Without Ivy quietly laundering the human errors, smoothing over the bureaucratic bottlenecks, and synchronizing the underground schedules with legitimate operations, the entire machine had jammed instantly—leaving a trail of breadcrumbs so clean and obvious that federal agents could follow it blindfolded.

Just then, the heavy oak doors of the conference room burst open.

Vanessa Sterling strode into the room, her face flushed with indignation, wearing a stunning Chanel dress that contrasted sharply with the grim atmosphere of the meeting.

“Dante, this is ridiculous!” Vanessa snapped, tossing her designer handbag onto the edge of the table. “There are men in federal windbreakers swarming the front gates! They’re demanding access to the guest wing and my personal financial records! Call your judges! Call Senator Vance! Have them arrested!”

Dante didn't move. He slowly turned his head to look at her. The fury in his eyes was so absolute, so terrifyingly calm, that Vanessa actually stopped mid-rant.

“They aren't going to be arrested, Vanessa,” Dante said softly.

“Why not?!” she shrieked. “You’re a Morelli! You own this state!”

“I did own this state,” Dante corrected, his voice like grinding stones. “Until thirty minutes ago, when the federal task force used a master operational index to map out every single asset I own. An index compiled, maintained, and organized entirely by the woman whose hair you cut off yesterday.”

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. “Are you out of your mind? You’re blaming me because some fat maid decided to commit federal treason?!”

“She didn't commit treason, Vanessa,” Dante roared, slamming his hand onto the mahogany table with a force that made the crystal decanters rattle. “She did her job! Her literal, designated job of cleaning rooms, while you spent your time reminding her of her place!”

The room went dead silent. Marco and Arthur looked at the floor, knowing the explosive temper of their boss all too well.

Vanessa stepped back, her eyes wide with shock and sudden, desperate fear. “Dante... you’re protecting her? Over me? Over our engagement? Over my family’s political backing?”

May you like

Dante looked at her with utter, freezing contempt.

“Your family’s political backing just evaporated the moment the Justice Department received that dossier,” Dante said coldly. “And as for our engagement... pack your bags, Vanessa. You have one hour to get out of my house before I let the federal agents escort you off the property as a material witness.”
