Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clean, cold clarity.

The private security force of Velasco International had swept through the mountain roads, neutralizing the remaining Lucciano attackers and securing the area. By morning, the head of the Lucciano cartel had been captured at a private estate in Querétaro, his operations dismantled, and his empire dismantled within hours by Nicolás's legal and illegal networks.

But the real battle was not fought with guns. It was fought in the quiet, elegant study of the Velasco mansion in Bosques de las Lomas.

Nicolás sat behind his desk, his black suit immaculate, his face unreadable. Beside him stood Sofía, her medical bag resting on the floor, her faded uniform clean and ironed.

Across the desk sat Doña Leonor Velasco.

She was no longer wearing her ivory suit or her pearl necklace. She wore a simple, dark gray dress, her face looking old, tired, and defeated. Behind her stood two federal prosecutors, their folders filled with financial records and forensic evidence.

"The German boutique was owned by a shell company, Mother," Nicolás said, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. "And that shell company was funded by a trust account in the Cayman Islands. An account registered under your maiden name."

Leonor didn't look up. Her hands lay flat on her lap, trembling slightly.

"You didn't just buy the chemical," Nicolás continued, his gray eyes drilling into her. "You hired the Lucciano men. You gave them the digital security codes to the mansion. You allowed them to place the tracking device in my son’s pajamas."

"I did it for the family!" Leonor suddenly cried out, her head snapping up, her eyes wild with a desperate, twisted pride. "The Velasco name was being ruined, Nicolás! You broke off the alliance with Valeria’s family! You were going to let the shipping terminals fall to the government! I needed to force your hand! I needed to make you realize that you needed us—that you needed the old ways!"

"By poisoning a ten-month-old child?" Sofía stepped forward, her voice ringing through the room with a deep, furious authority. "By making your own grandson scream in agony for seven weeks? You are not a matriarch, Doña Leonor. You are a monster."

Leonor stared at Sofía, her lips curling into a final, venomous sneer. "You... you ruined everything. A common nurse from a public clinic. You have no place in this house."

"She has more right to be in this house than you do," Nicolás said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register. "Because she saved the heir to this family. And she saved me."

He nodded to the federal prosecutors. "Take her away."

Leonor stood up slowly, her head held high as the agents led her toward the door. As she passed Sofía, she stopped, her eyes locking onto the younger woman's face with a dark, chilling intensity.

"This world will swallow you whole, girl," Leonor whispered.

"I wash bedpans for a living, Doña Leonor," Sofía replied, her chin tilted high. "I’ve seen much dirtier things than you."

The door closed behind them, leaving the study in a deep, peaceful silence.
