Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Victor Sterling

The mention of Victor Sterling’s name brought back a wave of cold dread that Elena had tried to bury under eighteen months of sleepless nights and diaper changes.
“How do you know about Victor?” Elena whispered, her hands trembling as she gripped her coffee cup.
“I told you, Elena, I own Chicago,” Nathaniel replied, his voice hardening into the ruthless executive tone that made men tremble in boardrooms. “When I found out you had a child, I initiated a complete security audit of your life to ensure no one was a threat to my daughter. My investigators flagged three unauthorized access attempts on your personal accounts originating from a shell company tied to Sterling Capital.”
Elena closed her eyes, rubbing her temples.
“Victor didn't just want my business accounts, Nathaniel,” she said bitterly. “Before I married you, Victor and I designed the master plan for the South Loop waterfront redevelopment. It was a billion-dollar municipal project funded partly by city grants and partly by private equity.”
“Sterling Capital and Cross Meridian,” Nathaniel recalled, his brow furrowing as the corporate puzzle pieces clicked together. “Cross Meridian acquired the financing tier of that project four years ago.”
“Right,” Elena nodded. “And right before we got married, I discovered that Victor had falsified environmental impact reports to push the project through wetlands, pocketing fifteen million dollars in kickbacks. When I threatened to take the evidence to the federal prosecutor, Victor didn't just threaten my career—he threatened my life.”
Nathaniel’s entire body went rigid. The air in the small hospital room grew dangerously cold.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Nathaniel demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal growl. “You were my wife! You were living under my roof! Why didn't you come to me?!”
“Because you were too busy courting the municipal board to notice!” Elena fired back, tears of long-repressed trauma spilling over her lashes. “Every time I tried to talk to you about work, you analyzed the market risk! You told me to let the legal team handle it! You didn't want a partner, Nathaniel! You wanted a quiet ornament who didn't bring complications into your pristine life!”
Nathaniel flinched as if he had been struck across the face. The words hit him harder than any bullet or hostile takeover ever could.
He had wanted control so badly that he had walled his own wife out of his protection.
“When I got pregnant,” Elena continued, her voice shaking, “I knew that if Victor found out I was having a Cross heir, he would use the baby as leverage to silence me forever. So I walked away from your money, your towers, and your protection. I wanted out. I wanted to disappear.”
Nathaniel stood up slowly. He walked over to the window, staring out at the grey Chicago dawn breaking over the frozen river.

When he turned back around, his eyes were burning with an absolute, terrifying resolve.
“Victor Sterling thinks he can touch what belongs to a Cross?” Nathaniel asked softly, a terrifying smile touching his lips. “He’s about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping bear.”
