Chapter 5 - The Trial of Iron and Silk

By 1:00 AM, the grand parlor of the Moretti estate looked like a war zone.

Gabriel’s loyal elite guards had secured every exit, disarming Frank’s and Julian’s mercenary security team within twenty minutes of returning to the grounds.

In the center of the room, illuminated by the grand crystal chandelier, Julian Moretti was forced onto his knees, his hands cable-tied behind his back, his face bruised and bloody. Beside him, Frank Moretti sat bound to a heavy wooden chair, his arrogant composure entirely shattered.

Gabriel stood in front of them, his dark coat soaked with rain, holding his gun at his side, his face carved out of pure stone.

The double doors of the parlor opened softly.

Emma walked into the room, flanked by two loyal guards.

She wore a clean, dry sweater, her hair wet, holding Anthony and Lucia wrapped safely in warm blankets. The twins had been thoroughly examined by an independent medical specialist brought by Marco—the toxin had been fully flushed from their systems, their fevers completely gone, and both infants were sleeping peacefully.

When Gabriel saw Emma walk in holding his healthy children, the terrifying, murderous tension in his posture visibly cracked. He stepped toward her, taking her face in his large, trembling hands, checking her for any injuries.

"Are you hurt?" Gabriel whispered, his voice shaking with intense, overwhelming emotion. "Did they touch you?"

"I'm fine, Gabriel," Emma said softly, laying her hand over his. "The babies are safe. They're going to be okay."

Gabriel turned back to face his uncle and cousin, his dark eyes instantly returning to a state of lethal, uncompromising fury.

"You poisoned my children," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that made Julian sob in terror. "You murdered Isabella by bribing her private physician to delay her emergency surgery... all to take control of Moretti Holdings."

Julian wept hysterically, shaking his head. "It was Frank! It was all Frank's idea! He promised me forty percent of the shipping shares if I helped him manipulate the board!"

"Shut up, you sniveling coward!" Frank spat at his nephew, glaring up at Gabriel with cold, defiant venom. "You turned soft, Gabriel! Ever since you tried to legitimize this family, you lost your edge! You brought a nobody—a penniless seamstress from Astoria—into our house and let her dictate our affairs! You disgraced our bloodline!"

Emma stepped forward, holding baby Lucia in her arm, looking down at Frank with absolute, unyielding contempt.

"You talk about bloodline, Mr. Moretti," Emma said, her voice ringing out across the silent room like a bell. "But you don't know the first thing about family. Family isn't built on greed, murder, or cowards hiding in the dark. It is built on love, sacrifice, and the strength to protect those who cannot protect themselves."

She looked at Gabriel. "He isn't a leader, Gabriel. He's just a weak, pathetic old man who failed."

Frank looked at Emma, his face twisting in bitter, powerless rage as he realized that his entire multi-million-dollar conspiracy had been completely destroyed by the very woman he had dismissed as a helpless wet nurse.

"Take them away, Marco," Gabriel ordered coldly, turning his back on his relatives. "Hand every piece of encrypted evidence, the recorded confessions, and the financial ledgers to the federal prosecutors. Make sure neither of them ever sees the daylight again."

"Yes, Don Moretti," Marco bowed, signaling the guards to drag Julian and Frank out of the manor.

As the heavy doors closed, cutting off Julian’s desperate screams for mercy, a profound, quiet peace descended upon the house for the first time in years.
