Chapter 5 - The Sting at the Grand Hotel

The plan was executed with surgical precision forty-eight hours later.
Instead of panicking, Arthur Vance had done what he did best: he turned a threat into a trap. His corporate IT security team, working alongside the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division, spent thirty-six hours analyzing the digital footprints Clara had threatened them with. They discovered that the fabricated tax evasion logs weren't just fake—they contained a unique digital signature traceable directly to Clara’s private server at her boutique office.
All they needed was physical possession of the flash drive and Clara’s recorded confession of extortion.
Sarah insisted on being the bait.
— Absolutely not, Arthur had argued in his study, slamming his fist on his mahogany desk. — It’s too dangerous, Sarah. Clara is unstable!
— Dad, Sarah said, standing tall on her crutches, her eyes burning with an unshakeable resolve. — She called me. She wants to crush me. If you go, she’ll run to the press immediately. She needs to feel like she’s winning against the 'weak, fragile' wife. It has to be me.
Reluctantly, Arthur conceded, but only under the condition of absolute security.
The meeting was set for 8:00 PM in the lounge of the Grand Regency Hotel downtown—a public, high-end location where Clara felt safe enough to conduct her blackmail.
Sarah sat at a corner table, her crutches leaning against the velvet bench. Beneath the lapel of her blazer, a wire thinner than a human hair was taped to her collarbone, broadcasting directly to an FBI surveillance van parked across the street.
Clara arrived ten minutes late, wearing oversized sunglasses and a long trench coat, looking around nervously before sliding into the booth across from Sarah.
— You brought the papers? Clara asked without greeting, her voice tight and anxious.
— I brought the authorization forms for the offshore accounts, Sarah lied smoothly, placing a thick leather folder on the marble table. — But I want to see the flash drive first. I need to know my father is safe before I sign away four million dollars.
Clara smirked, a flash of her brother’s arrogant vanity surfacing. She reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a small, metallic silver thumb drive, letting it drop onto the table between them.
— It’s all here, Sarah. Every single line of code David wrote to frame your precious father. You sign those papers, hand over the transfer keys, and I give you this drive. Otherwise, I press 'send' on an encrypted email to the Department of Justice in ten seconds.
— Tell me how he did it, Sarah said, leaning forward, putting on a show of desperate defeat. — Please, Clara. I just need to understand. How long were you two planning to destroy my family?
Clara chuckled, taking a sip of the water on the table.
— Planning? Oh, honey. David started planning the day he met you at that charity auction four years ago. You were an easy target—rich, quiet, desperate for someone to love you. He knew your father’s net worth down to the penny. I helped him set up the shell companies two years ago. We were going to bleed you dry, toss you into an asylum, and take your daughter’s trust fund next. You were just a step on the ladder, Sarah.
— And you knew he was hurting me? Sarah asked, her voice steady, dropping the act of panic entirely. — You knew he was putting hands on me?
— Please, Clara sneered, leaning back with supreme disdain. — You were weak. You practically invited it. A real woman would have—
— A real woman would do this, Sarah interrupted.
Sarah reached across the table, grabbed the silver flash drive, and dropped it straight into her steaming cup of Earl Grey tea.
Clara gasped, jumping out of her seat. — What the hell are you doing?! You crazy bitch!
— You don't have an encrypted email ready to send, Clara, Sarah said, her voice echoing with chilling authority across the restaurant. — Because you don't know how to run David’s scripts. You’re just a desperate accomplice trying to save her own skin.
— I’ll ruin you! Clara shrieked, reaching into her purse—
— Federal Agents! Don't move!
Four heavily armed FBI tactical officers burst through the main doors of the lounge, while two undercover agents sitting at the adjacent tables instantly stood up, drawing their badges and sidearms.
— Hands where we can see them! Drop the bag!
Clara stood frozen, her face turning a ghastly shade of grey as the hotel lounge erupted into chaos. Restaurant patrons gasped as the agents forced Clara down onto the velvet bench, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto her wrists.
— Sarah Vance! You set me up! You set me up! Clara screamed, thrashing wildly as she was dragged past the polished tables.
Sarah didn't even stand up. She calmly took a napkin, wiped a drop of spilled tea off the table, and watched as David’s sister was marched out into the rain, right into the flashing red and blue lights of waiting police cruisers.
From the doorway of the lounge, Arthur Vance walked in, taking off his wet trench coat. He walked over to his daughter, picked up her crutches, and handed them to her with an expression of overwhelming pride.
— Good work, kiddo, Arthur said softly.
May you like
Sarah smiled, taking her crutches and standing tall.
— That wasn't work, Dad, she said, looking out at the flashing lights. — That was spring cleaning.
