Chapter 5 - The Vanguard Endgame

The private airstrip at Boeing Field was shrouded in a heavy, low-hanging Seattle mist.

A sleek, black Gulfstream G650 sat idling on the tarmac, its twin jet turbines whining softly against the damp night air. Inside the luxury cabin, the leather seating was plush, the lighting dim, and the atmosphere thick with the quiet desperation of a sinking ship.

Richard Vance sat across from a tied-and-gagged Tyler Lawson, who was whimpering softly into a duct-tape muzzle while blood dripped from a cut on his eyebrow.

"Quiet down, Tyler," Richard sighed, adjusting his gold-plated cufflinks. "You served your purpose. You were supposed to keep the estate quiet while we scrubbed the legacy servers clean of your father’s illegal overseas accounts. But no—you had to stage a clumsy theatrical accident to frame a maid, and you brought an elite trauma surgeon directly into our path."

Tyler shook his head frantically, his eyes wide with terror as Richard pulled a small, silver-barreled automatic pistol from his holster and checked the magazine.

"Please," Tyler tried to muffle through the tape.

"Shh," Richard smiled politely. "The pilot will file a flight plan to Zurich. By morning, you and your sister will be historical footnotes—unfortunate victims of a tragic private aviation accident over the North Atlantic. Vanguard Holdings will absorb the Lawson estate legally through default proxy, and my family’s dominance in the Pacific Northwest will be absolute."

Richard stood up, walking toward the cabin door to signal the pilot for takeoff.

He didn't make it to the door.

CRASH.

The heavy aluminum-and-glass cabin door blew inward, shattering into a thousand glittering shards as a flashbang grenade detonated on the metal steps outside.

"FBI! Federal Maritime Authority! Nobody move!"

Before Richard could raise his weapon, three tactical operators in black Kevlar gear swarmed through the opening like a wave of dark water. A heavy combat boot caught Richard square in the chest, sending him crashing backward over a leather velvet table. His pistol skidded across the plush carpet.

From behind the frontline operators stepped Dr. Sarah Chen, her expression as cold and resolute as carved stone. Behind her stood Detective Vance, flanked by federal marshals holding digital recording tablets and arrest warrants.

Richard groaned, clutching his bruised ribs as a federal marshal yanked his arms behind his back and snapped steel cuffs around his wrists.

"You... you can't do this," Richard spat, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as he looked up at Sarah. "Vanguard owns half the federal judges in this state. You’ll never make these charges stick."

Sarah walked slowly down the aisle of the jet cabin, stopping just inches away from where Richard was pinned to the floor. She reached down, picked up his dropped pistol, and slipped it into her pocket with chilling precision.

"Judges can be bought, Richard," Sarah said quietly. "But federal anti-money-laundering indictments signed directly by the Department of Justice's counter-intelligence division? Those tend to stick rather well."

She tapped her temple. "You forgot something very important back at the estate, Mr. Vance. When you jammed the server room’s radio signal, you forgot that my medical telemetry tablet operates on a separate, encrypted military-band satellite link. Every word you spoke in that server room—and every confession Tyler whispered in the library—was streamed live to the U.S. Attorney's office twenty minutes ago."

Richard’s face crumpled. The unshakeable corporate lawyer mask finally dissolved into the pathetic grimace of a trapped criminal.

"Take him away," Sarah ordered, turning her back on him without another glance.
