Chapter 2: The Counterattack

Chapter 2: The Counterattack

The safehouse was a secluded, modern cabin owned by Daniel’s closest childhood friend, a property entirely off the Vance family radar. For the first forty-eight hours, Daniel never left Ava’s side. He brought in a trusted, independent medical team who ran full toxicology reports on Ava.

The results were chilling. The "medicine" Margaret had been forcing down Ava’s throat was a potent cocktail of high-dose sedatives and heavy anti-psychotics—drugs designed to induce confusion, memory loss, and physical lethargy in a perfectly healthy person. Ava hadn't been suffering from a neurological regression; she had been systematically poisoned and chemically subdued.

By the third day, with the toxins finally clearing from her system, the sharp, brilliant mind that Daniel had fallen in love with began to return. She was sitting up in bed, color returning to her cheeks, though her eyes still held the trauma of her captivity.

"She won't stop, Daniel," Ava said, her voice stronger now as she held a warm cup of tea. "Your mother has built her entire identity around control and wealth. The Vance Group is facing a massive liquidity crisis—I found out right before she had me taken. She needs my grandfather’s trust fund to bail the company out. If she doesn’t get it, the board will oust her by the end of the month."

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing his temples. The betrayal ran so deep it felt like a physical weight in his chest. "I’ve already initiated a quiet internal audit of the Vance Group. She’s been embezzling, Ava. Moving funds into offshore accounts to cover her personal investment losses. She wanted your signature so she could legally liquidate your trust to cover her tracks."

"What’s her next move?" Rosa asked anxiously, entering the room with a tray of food. She had become their fiercest ally, refusing to leave Ava’s side.

"She’s already launching a public relations preemptive strike," Daniel said grimly, turning on a tablet.

A headline on a major business news outlet flashed across the screen: "Tragedy Strikes Vance Group: Matriarch Margaret Vance Expresses Deep Concern Over Daughter-in-Law’s Sudden Mental Collapse and Disappearance." The article painted a picture of a devoted mother-in-law heartbroken by Ava’s "erratic, drug-fueled flight from medical care," subtly implying that Daniel was being manipulated or held hostage by an unstable wife.

"She’s trying to invalidate anything we say before we can even say it," Ava whispered, her eyes narrowing. "If the public believes I'm mentally incompetent, any legal action we take against her will look like the delusions of a sick woman."

"Then we don't use standard legal channels," Daniel said, a fierce, protective glint in his eyes. "We don't give her time to prepare a defense. The annual Vance Group Gala is in three days. It’s the biggest night of the year for the company, broadcasted live to investors and shareholders. She thinks she has hidden you away from the world. She thinks she has won."

Ava looked at Daniel, a slow, determined smile breaking through her exhaustion. "She thinks I’m still the weak, terrified girl in that wheelchair."

"Are you ready to show them who you really are?" Daniel asked gently.

"More than ready," Ava replied, her grip tightening on her cup. "It’s time to tear down her kingdom."

Over the next seventy-two hours, a meticulous trap was laid. Daniel worked behind the scenes with a team of elite forensic accountants and a powerful, independent media conglomerate that Margaret couldn't buy off. Rosa provided a sworn, recorded deposition detailing the physical abuse, the forced drugging, and the isolation Ava had endured.

Meanwhile, Margaret Vance was celebrating prematurely. Safe in her mansion, she assumed Daniel would eventually come to his senses to protect the family name. She spent her days preparing her speech for the gala, ready to announce a "temporary restructuring" of the company’s assets—a polite euphemism for absorbing Ava's wealth, confident that her legal team would manufacture a retroactive power of attorney.

The night of the gala arrived. The grand ballroom of the St. Regis hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive tuxedos, and flowing champagne. Margaret stood at the center of it all, holding a glass of crystal-clear champagne, basking in the adulation of the city’s elite.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced, his voice echoing through the massive speakers. "Please welcome the CEO and Chairperson of the Vance Group, Mrs. Margaret Vance!"

The room erupted into applause as Margaret walked up the steps to the podium, her smile radiant, her posture impeccable. She adjusted the microphone, looking out over the crowd of shareholders, tech moguls, and journalists.

"Thank you," Margaret began, her voice brimming with rehearsed emotion. "Tonight is a night of celebration, but it is also a night of heavy hearts. As many of you know, my beloved daughter-in-law, Ava, has been facing a catastrophic health crisis. In these trying times, family is everything. We have taken every measure to ensure her comfort, and tonight, I am stepping forward to carry the burden of her responsibilities..."

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind Margaret flickered.

The polished corporate presentation vanished, replaced by a harsh, stark video recording.

The ballroom went dead silent.

It was a video from the security cameras inside the Vance estate study—footage Margaret thought her IT team had permanently erased. On the giant screens, in crystal-clear high definition, Margaret’s voice boomed through the ballroom speakers: "Sign the papers, Ava! You are nothing without this family! No one is coming to save you!"

The crowd gasped as the video showed Margaret violently slapping Rosa, knocking over the medicine, and Ava falling desperately from the wheelchair onto the floor.

Margaret froze, the color draining from her face instantly. Her breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the screen. "Turn it off! Cut the power! Turn it off right now!" she screamed at the tech booth, her carefully crafted mask shattering into a million jagged pieces in front of live cameras and hundreds of horrified investors.

But the video didn't stop. It transitioned directly to a live medical report, displaying Ava’s toxicology results and the severe levels of sedatives found in her blood.

"Looking for this, Mother?"

A powerful voice echoed from the back of the ballroom. The heavy double doors swung open.

Walking down the center aisle, arm in arm, were Daniel and Ava. Ava looked breathtaking, wearing an emerald green silk gown that radiated elegance and strength. There was no wheelchair. There was no weakness. Her eyes were sharp, locked directly onto the trembling woman on the stage. Beside her, Daniel stood tall, his expression carved from granite, holding a legal folder in his hand.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea, cameras flashing frantically as the "missing, unstable" wife walked gracefully toward her captor.
