Chapter 5 - Legal and Financial Ruin

The ArrestThe boardroom doors opened again, but this time, it wasn't my father's associates.
Two uniform officers from the New York State Police walked in, accompanied by a detective in a trench coat.
"Derek Vale?" the detective asked, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt.
"What?" Derek gasped, shrinking back into his seat. "For what? You can't arrest me for a marriage argument!"
"Mr. Vale, you are under arrest for reckless endangerment in the first degree, domestic neglect of a vulnerable dependent, and criminal facilitation of bodily harm," the detective said, stepping forward and pulling Derek’s arms behind his back. The heavy metal cuffs clicked into place with a dry, final sound.
"No! Willow, tell them! Tell them it was an accident!" Derek screamed as he was hauled out of his chair.
"We also have a warrant from the federal financial crimes division," the detective added, looking down at a document in his hand. "It seems your corporate accounts have some... irregular activities. Your former assistant, Chloe Bennett, spent the last three hours at the precinct explaining how you used corporate cards to fund her apartment and personal shopping, claiming them as 'client entertainment expenses' for the restructuring firm."
Derek spun his head around, looking at Arthur Pendelton. "Arthur! Help me!"
Arthur turned his back to him, looking out the window.
As they dragged Derek out of the boardroom, his polished leather shoes squeaked against the marble floors, a pathetic contrast to the confident stride he had walked in with just twenty minutes earlier.
The Sanctuary of RecoveryAn hour later, I was back in the private wing of the hospital, resting in the soft light of the morning.
The IV was delivering a steady stream of nutrients, and my body finally felt as if it were truly healing. The physical pain was gone, replaced by a deep, quiet sense of relief.
My father sat beside me, holding a cup of tea.
"It's over, Willow," he said softly. "His bank accounts have been frozen. The apartment is locked. His family in Ohio has already been notified that any attempt to post his bail will result in Montgomery Global recalling the commercial loans on their family-owned dealership."
"I don't want them to suffer, Dad," I whispered. "His parents are good people. They didn't know what he had become."
"I know," my father said, his expression softening. "I’ve arranged for their business to be left out of it, on the condition that they do not support him in his defense. They agreed, Willow. When they saw the highway video, his own mother wept and told me she was ashamed to have given him her name."
I looked out the window, watching the city below.
"I spent three years trying to prove I didn't need your name, Dad," I said, a tear escaping my eye. "I thought if I used your wealth, it would mean I couldn't build something real on my own."
May you like
My father reached over, taking my hand.
"Willow, my wealth is just paper," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "But my love for you is the only real thing I have ever built. You didn't need my money to be strong. You survived that highway because you have your mother’s spirit. But you never, ever have to walk in the rain alone again."
