Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

"What's that?" I whispered, my eyes locking onto his.

Roman reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy gold signet ring—the crest of the Blackwell empire, a ring that commanded the loyalty of thousands of men across the continent. He placed it gently into the palm of my hand and folded my fingers over it.

"My kingdom," he said solemnly. "My life. My heart. Everything I own, everything I am, belongs to you. If you walk away right now, I will guard you from the shadows for the rest of your days and never bother you again. But if you stay..."

He took a slow breath, his dark eyes pleading.

"...if you stay, be the light in my dark world. Help me raise my daughter. Help me build something clean out of all this blood."

Sophie wrapped her little arms around my waist, looking up at me with big, hopeful brown eyes. "Please stay, Sister Eva. Daddy smiles now when he talks about you."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. For years, I had fought through the dark alone—counting coins in empty diners, grieving my little sister, surviving cold nights with no hope on the horizon. I had spent my life trying to save others, never dreaming that someone would stand in front of me, ready to burn down the world just to keep me warm.

I looked at the ring in my hand, then up at the powerful, dangerous man who was looking at me as if I held his very soul in my hands.

"I'm not going anywhere, Roman," I whispered, stepping into his space.

A breathless, beautiful smile broke across Roman's hard features. He wrapped his massive arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest, burying his face in my hair as if he had finally found solid ground after a lifetime at sea.

"I swear to you, Evangeline," Roman whispered into my skin, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal authority. "As long as I draw breath, no one will ever cause you pain again."

One year later, the Starlight Diner was bought and converted into a free community health clinic bearing the name The Grace Hayes Memorial Center.

And standing at its grand opening, dressed in white scrubs with a diamond ring sparkling on my finger, I held Roman's hand tightly as Sophie laughed in the courtyard behind us. The darkness had tried to consume us all, but in the midnight hour, love had arrived—and it had changed our world forever.
