Chapter 5 - The Storm of Slander

The fallout was swift, calculated, and devastating.

By 6:00 AM on Thursday morning, the front page of the Boston Daily Globe and several major digital news outlets carried a sensationalized, terrifying headline:

"HUSH MONEY & DANGEROUS MEDICINE: BILLIONAIRE RICHARD HARRISON FUNDS FAMILY OF UNLICENSED CHILD WHO INTERFERED IN AIRPORT EMERGENCY"

The accompanying article, fed by anonymous leaks from Colin Dray and Victor Vance, painted a twisted, malicious picture of the event at Logan Airport. It claimed that Maya Lin was an unsupervised child whose "unsanitary, reckless intervention" could have fatally infected Ethan Harrison, and that Richard Harrison was using millions of dollars from his charitable foundation to buy the mother’s silence and cover up massive security failures at his firm.

By noon, news trucks were parked five-deep outside the elegant limestone apartment building in Back Bay where Sarah and Maya had moved just forty-eight hours earlier.

Reporters shoved microphones toward the entrance doors, shouting questions at anyone who walked through: "Is it true your daughter didn't have permission to perform a procedure?" "Did Richard Harrison pay you off to protect his corporate image?" "Are you worried about Child Protective Services opening an investigation into your home?"

Inside the apartment, Sarah stood in the middle of the beautiful, sunlit living room, shaking uncontrollably as she watched the television screen. The news anchors were debating whether Maya should be lauded as a hero or investigated for reckless behavior.

"Mama?" Maya walked out of her new bedroom, holding a drawing she had made of a bird. "Why are those people with cameras standing outside our windows?"

"It's... it's nothing, sweetie," Sarah gasped, trying desperately to keep her voice steady while hiding her frantic tears. "Just stay away from the windows, okay?"

The front door unlocked, and Richard Harrison stepped inside, accompanied by two heavy security guards. His face was thunderous, his eyes blazing with a dangerous, icy fury that his corporate rivals hadn't seen in years.

"Mr. Harrison!" Sarah cried out, rushing toward him. "What is happening? The news... they're saying they're going to call state investigators! They're saying Maya put your son in danger!"

"Listen to me, Sarah," Richard said, taking her by the shoulders and looking directly into her eyes. "This is not about you, and it is not about Maya. This is a orchestrated attack by men inside my own company who want to take control of my business. They are using your family as collateral damage to break me."

"Then let us leave!" Sarah begged, tears streaming down her cheeks. "We can pack our bags right now! We can go back to Rhode Island! I can't let them destroy Maya's name!"

"No," a small voice echoed from the hallway.

Everyone turned. Ethan Harrison sat in his wheelchair at the end of the corridor, his hands tightly gripping his controls as he drove himself into the room. His small face was set with a fierce, absolute determination that mirrored his father's.

"They are lying about Maya," Ethan said, his voice loud, clear, and unassisted by any device. "Maya saved me. She’s my best friend."

Richard looked down at his son, his heart swelling with immense pride. He then looked at Sarah and Maya.

"We are not running," Richard said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "If they want a fight over truth and integrity, I am going to give them one that will wipe them out permanently."

Richard picked up his phone and dialed his chief legal officer. "Assemble a global press conference at the Harrison Dynamics Headquarters auditorium for 3:00 PM today. Invite every local station, every national network, and every corporate news outlet on the East Coast. And call Dr. Aris Thorne."

"What are you going to do, sir?" his legal officer asked over the line.

"I am going to let the world see who the real monsters are," Richard replied, slamming the phone shut.

At 2:30 PM, inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of Harrison Dynamics, Victor Vance and Colin Dray were sipping champagne, watching the stock price of Harrison Dynamics drop three percent in response to the media scandal.

"The board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning," Colin gloated, adjusting his tie in the mirror. "We have more than enough votes from the institutional investors to force Richard to step down as CEO due to public relations fallout."

"He’s hosting a press conference downstairs right now," Vance said with a smirk, looking at his watch. "Let him dig his own grave on live television. It saves us the trouble of burying him."
