Chapter 2 - The Fall of an Empire

The room felt entirely devoid of oxygen.
Nathan’s jaw worked silently for several seconds before any sound came out. "Daughter?" he whispered, looking wildly between my father and me. "No... no, that’s impossible. Victoria’s father ran a small accounting firm in Chicago! He’s a nobody!"
"My father ran the accounting firm that audited the shadow funds of three sovereign nations," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the hall as two operators stepped forward, gently assisting me to my feet. "He didn't retire, Nathan. He stepped down to take the executive chair of Sterling Defense."
Celeste dropped her head to the floor, weeping hysterically. As a senior corporate consultant, she knew exactly what Sterling Defense was. They didn't just manage logistics—they controlled private satellite grids, international maritime shipping lanes, and government intelligence networks across four continents. Ashford Global Logistics wasn't even a competitor; it was a tiny bug under their boot.
My father draped a heavy, warm cashmere coat over my shaking shoulders, holding me close for a brief moment. "Are you alright, my little bird?" he whispered, his hands surprisingly gentle as he checked the bruising on my wrists.
"I have everything, Dad," I whispered back, unclasping the sapphire pendant from my neck and placing it into his hand. "Every offshore wire transfer. Every rigged supply chain invoice. Every threat. All two hundred strikes."
"Good," Dad said quietly. He turned around, his eyes locking onto Nathan like a predator sizing up roadkill.
"You... you can't do this!" Nathan screamed, trying to regain his footing, though a guard instantly pinned him down with a heavy boot to his shoulder blade. "This is private property! You raided my home! I'll call the federal authorities! I'll ruin you!"
My father let out a dry, chilling laugh. "Call them, Nathan. Please. Use my assistant’s phone."
Before Nathan could respond, three men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases walked through the shattered doorway, accompanied by two uniformed officials wearing badges from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice.
"Nathaniel Ashford," the lead federal agent stated, pulling a document from his coat. "As of seven minutes ago, an emergency federal freeze has been applied to all domestic and international accounts associated with Ashford Global Logistics, as well as your personal holdings, under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and federal racketeering statutes."

Nathan gasped for air, his face turning ghostly white. "What?! On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds of a multi-terabyte encrypted data transmission received by our headquarters thirty minutes ago," the agent replied coldly. "Detailing systematic tax fraud, shell-company money laundering, and direct bribing of port authorities in three states."
