CHAPTER 1: The Stranger in the Snow and the Ghost of Ellis

CHAPTER 1: The Stranger in the Snow and the Ghost of Ellis

The air outside the courthouse didn't just feel cold; it felt like broken glass.

Harper wrapped her threadbare wool coat tighter around her shoulders, her fingers numb as she clutched her purse. Inside that purse was a phone with 4% battery and exactly twenty-seven dollars. Behind her, the heavy glass doors of the courthouse swung open.

A sharp, familiar click of designer heels echoed against the concrete.

"Oh, Harper. You still look so... fragile."

Harper stopped. She didn't want to turn around, but her body betrayed her. Standing there, wrapped in a pristine winter-white cashmere coat that Brandon had undoubtedly paid for, was Avery Lane. Her glossy brown hair was perfectly styled, unaffected by the freezing wind. Her lips were painted a celebratory, aggressive crimson.

"Avery," Harper said, her voice barely a whisper. Her heart skipped that familiar, uneven half-step. In two, three. Out two, three, she reminded herself.

"Brandon told me it was finally over," Avery said, stepping closer, her eyes gleaming with a terrifying sort of triumph. She reached out, mockingly adjusting the collar of Harper’s cheap coat. "I just wanted to come by and thank you. For making it easy. Brandon is hosting the billionaire investor dinner at the Plaza tonight—the one that will secure Hail & Co.’s global expansion. And guess who gets to sit in your old seat right next to him?"

Avery leaned in, her perfume—the same one Harper had smelled on Brandon's scarf—choking the frosty air. "Me. I am the new face of Hail & Co. While you... well, I heard HR processed your termination this morning. Where will you go, Harper? A shelter? A motel?"

Harper’s chest tightened. The panic was clawing its way up her throat. She had nothing left. No money, no home, no career. Brandon had frozen everything.

Avery laughed, a high, mocking sound that made Harper feel microscopic. "Enjoy the snow, Harper. It suits you. Cold and empty."

With a dramatic swirl of her white coat, Avery turned and stepped into the back of a waiting black Mercedes. The car sped away, splashing dirty slush toward the sidewalk.

Harper sank onto her knees on the courthouse steps. The world was tilting. Her breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. Worse with panic. Worse with dehydration. She closed her eyes, preparing for the darkness to take her.

"Your father left you more than a name, Harper."

The voice was deep, resonant, and entirely unfamiliar.

Harper forced her eyes open. Standing over her was a tall stranger clad in a tailored, midnight-black overcoat. The snow fell around him, but he stood like an immovable monument. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his eyes possessed an ancient, sharp intelligence. He held a black umbrella over her, shielding her from the storm.

"Who... who are you?" Harper stammered, shivering. "My father died when I was five. He was just a failed clerk."

The older man offered a gloved hand, hoisting her up with surprising strength. "Your father was Arthur Ellis. And he was never a clerk. He was the majority shareholder of the Ellis Group—the silent conglomerate that owns forty percent of the very banks Brandon Hail just used to freeze your accounts."

Harper stared at him, bewildered. "That's impossible. We were poor."

"He hid you," the man explained smoothly, guiding her toward a sleek, armored Rolls-Royce that had silently pulled up to the curb. "To protect you from the corporate sharks who destroyed his health. He left your inheritance in a blind trust, managed by me, Arthur’s loyal counsel. The trust was dictated to unlock only under two conditions: you reach the age of twenty-eight, or you divorce the man who tried to strip you of your dignity. Today, you fulfilled both."

The driver opened the door. The interior of the car beamed with warmth and luxury.

"Where are we going?" Harper asked, her mind spinning.

The stranger smiled, a cold, dangerous expression. "My name is Logan Vance. And we are going to reclaim your kingdom, Miss Ellis. The investor dinner at the Plaza starts in two hours. Let’s change your outfit."
